Job Description

Job title: Manager Software Engineering / SW Technical Lead

Department

The Life Sciences R&D department consists of around 200 engineers developing Electron Microscopy (EM) solutions and applications that help our customers make the world cleaner, healthier, and safer. Our global teams—based in Eindhoven (NL), Brno (CZ), Hyderabad (IN), and Bordeaux (FR)—bring together expertise in hardware, software, and scientific applications.

Within this environment, we are strengthening our software capabilities for the cryo-EM workflow and are looking for a Software Engineering Manager to lead a focused, high-impact team.

The Role

As a Software Engineering Manager, you will lead a team of  software engineers responsible for the design, development, and lifecycle of a key application within the cryo-EM workflow. This application plays a critical role in enabling scientists to process, analyze, and interpret microscopy data.

This is a hands-on leadership role combining people management with technical leadership. You will guide the team’s day-to-day execution while actively shaping architecture, engineering practices, and technical direction.

You will work closely with product owners, scientists, and other engineering teams across sites to deliver high-quality software and continuously improve the way we build and operate our systems.

Responsibilities

Team Leadership & Development

  • Lead, mentor, and develop a team of  software engineers

  • Foster a collaborative, inclusive, and high-performing team culture

  • Support career development, performance management, and continuous learning

  • Contribute to hiring and onboarding of new team members

Technical Leadership

  • Provide hands-on technical guidance in software design, architecture, and implementation

  • Act as a key decision-maker for technical direction and trade-offs within the application

  • Ensure maintainable, scalable, and robust system design

  • Contribute to critical parts of the codebase where needed

Engineering Execution

  • Own end-to-end delivery of the team’s application, including planning, development, testing, and release

  • Collaborate with product management to define scope, priorities, and roadmap

  • Ensure high standards for code quality, testing, and documentation

  • Drive predictable and transparent delivery

Engineering Excellence

  • Promote modern software engineering practices (e.g., CI/CD, automated testing, code reviews)

  • Continuously improve development processes, tooling, and team efficiency

  • Ensure system reliability, performance, and maintainability

Collaboration & Impact

  • Work closely with cross-functional teams, including scientists, application specialists, and other engineering groups

  • Align with global R&D teams on standards, architecture, and integration points

  • Contribute to broader engineering initiatives and knowledge sharing across sites

Education and Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field

  • 10+ years experience in software development, including experience in a technical leadership or team lead role

  • Experience managing or mentoring engineers (formal or informal leadership)

  • Strong understanding of software architecture, design principles, and development practices

  • Hands-on experience with modern development tools and practices (e.g., version control, CI/CD, automated testing)

  • Ability to balance hands-on technical work with team leadership responsibilities

  • Experience working in cross-functional and/or international environments

  • Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with diverse stakeholders in a global organization

Nice to Have

  • Experience with scientific software, imaging, or data-intensive applications

  • Familiarity with Python, C++, or similar languages used in high-performance or scientific computing

  • Experience working with distributed systems or large datasets

  • Interest in life sciences, microscopy, or scientific research domains

Why Join Us

Join us in advancing cryo-electron microscopy technologies that enable groundbreaking discoveries in structural biology and drug development. You will work in a collaborative, international environment where your contributions directly impact scientific innovation and real-world outcomes.
