Job Summary
The Designer Principal supports gas, coal, and renewable retrofit and new generation self build projects by defining and overseeing design execution to meet Engineering Services design basis. Working with AE/EPC partners and senior I&C, Mechanical, and Electrical engineers, this role leads detailed drawing and 3D model reviews to optimize constructability, operability, maintainability, and safety (COMS); ensures designs follow EPC/technical specifications and Engineering Services standards; and provides design support through construction, commissioning, and closeout. The Designer Principal also coordinates stakeholder reviews, OEM engagement, and document management across the project portfolio.Job Description
Key Responsibilities
- Lead development, review, and approval of design drawings, schematics, and 3D models for major retrofit and new‑build packages across mechanical, civil, structural, and electrical disciplines.
- Drive COMS through detailed drawing and model reviews; identify and resolve constructability, access, maintenance, and safety issues.
- Use technical and EPC specifications to support self‑build proposal development and RFx/vendor deliverable reviews.
- Coordinate and lead comprehensive stakeholder reviews with AE/EPC teams and internal engineering disciplines (ME, EE, I&C, operations).
- Provide construction support: design clarifications, as‑built updates, punch‑list resolution, and field design changes.
- Ensure compliance with Engineering Services standards, codes, and industry best practices.
- Oversee document control practices; maintain and archive engineering drawings, system descriptions, and specification updates.
- Engage with OEMs and vendors to align design detail, interfaces, and deliverables.
- Mentor and coordinate work activities of other designers or technicians as required.
- Promote safety and adherence to site‑specific requirements during design and construction phases.
Knowledge & Skills
- Strong ability to interpret and create technical drawings, P&IDs, and schematics across disciplines.
- Attention to detail and design accuracy with an emphasis on constructability and maintainability.
- Effective communication and stakeholder coordination skills.
- Familiarity with regulatory and site safety requirements.
- Competence in document control and electronic archiving practices.
Working Conditions
- Approximately 25% travel, including day trips and overnight stays (up to a week or more).
- Work in both indoor and outdoor environments with exposure to heat, cold, noise, dust, fumes, and operating machinery.
- Mandatory safety gear required at generating stations: hard hat, eye/hearing protection, steel-toed shoes with heels and non-slip soles.
- Adherence to site-specific safety requirements is mandatory.

WHAT YOU’LL DO
- Develop and coordinate design drawings and sketches.
- Proficiency in the use of computer aided design software.
- Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office software.
- Prepare and analyze calculations, and conduct design and engineering studies as required.
- Carry to completion, drawings and related information representing final studies and designs necessary for construction.
- Check manufacturers' drawings and shop details and recommend changes to same. Check design drawings of other sections and exchange information with other design groups.
- Check drawings and perform design verification as assigned.
- Coordinate and review the work of others, when required.
- Prepare material and cost estimates as required.
- Perform work according to applicable design standards, criteria and procedures.
- Write notes relative to progressive steps to be taken at various stages of construction.
- Furnish work direction and assist in training of other employees in related work as required.
- Submit progress reports on status of job(s).
- Lead training for AEP or third party employees in basic skills of the position.
- Promote and support the Company's Accident Prevention and Safety and Health programs.
- Demonstrate ethical behavior as outlined in the AEP corporate policies.
- Support the AEP Corporate Compliance policies.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR
Education: Associate’s degree in applied science (AAS) in drafting and design computer aided design (CAD) or in civil, electrical or mechanical engineering technology and a minimum of 7 years of equivalent experience.
Equivalent experience without AAS degree - high school graduate and 10 years of experience in electric utility and/or related industrial drafting and/or computer aided drafting work.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with gas, coal, and renewable energy projects.
- Certification in design software or professional design organizations.
- Experience supporting construction, commissioning, and as‑built documentation on utility projects.
- Direct design experience in the power generation sector or equivalent.
- Proficiency with CAD and 3D modeling tools (AutoCAD, SolidWorks, PDMS/AVEVA, or similar).
- Strong understanding of mechanical, civil, structural, and electrical systems and familiarity with EPC processes and technical specifications.
- Demonstrated experience producing and reviewing complex construction drawings and design packages.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Physical demand level is Sedentary
Must be proficient in working with conventional drafting symbols and drafting methods and have the ability to distinguish colors. Must be able to operate a company motor vehicle and possess and maintain a valid state driver's license. Must meet all vehicle operation requirements as designated by federal and/or state law. This position may require shift work or overtime. Occasional, overnight travel to and work within a substation or power plant environment in obedience to all safety regulations and use of personal protection equipment.

Base Salary: ($42.13 - $52.40/hour) = ($88K - $109K/year)
