Job Description

What You Will Do

Johnson Controls is hiring! The Senior Electrical Engineer is responsible for electrical analysis, detailed design, controls integration, and overall electrical performance of HVAC equipment, including air handlers, fan coils, and blower coils. This role supports new product development, sustaining engineering, prototyping, laboratory validation, and manufacturing execution across air handling, fan coil, and VAV platforms.

In this position, you will work closely with cross‑functional teams—including mechanical, controls, test laboratory, compliance, sourcing, manufacturing, service, applications, and marketing—to deliver market‑leading, safe, compliant, serviceable, and cost‑effective HVAC products. You will provide technical leadership on complex electrical systems and serve as a subject‑matter expert for assigned products, subsystems, or technologies. This position is based onsite in Largo, FL. Candidates must be commuting distance to the facility, or able to relocate. We offer various relocation packages.

How You Will Do It

  • Define system-level electrical architectures, perform load analyses, and coordinate protective devices for HVAC equipment platforms.
  • Design and review electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and harnesses, and develop panel, enclosure, and junction layouts that support manufacturability, serviceability, and thermal performance.
  • Integrate motors, variable-frequency drives (VFDs), electronically commutated (EC) motors, controllers, sensors, actuators, and control interfaces across both line- and low-voltage systems.
  • Develop and maintain electrical engineering standards, parts libraries, specifications, and design rules supporting configurable products and dynamic bill of material (BOM) generation.
  • Interpret and apply applicable electrical safety and compliance requirements, including NEC, UL 1995, and UL 60335-2-40, ensuring designs meet agency requirements for wiring methods, protection, accessibility, and markings.
  • Create and maintain agency listing documentation, support certification testing, and work with internal compliance teams and third-party agencies to resolve non-conformances and implement corrective actions.
  • Support A2L refrigerant programs, including refrigerant detection system integration, alarm and control responses, and sensor location coordination.
  • Partner with the test laboratory to define and execute electrical test plans validating motors, drives, heaters, controllers, and safety devices.
  • Analyze test results, identify root causes, and drive corrective actions
  • Collaborate with sourcing to deliver production-ready electrical BOMs, qualify new suppliers and components, support cost and obsolescence mitigation,.
  • Support manufacturing engineering with DFMA improvements to ensure successful transition from design to production.
  • Provide electrical guidance to applications engineering, sales, service, and field teams regarding product capabilities, installation constraints, and troubleshooting.
  • Lead and participate in continuous improvement initiatives to reduce design cycle time and increase engineering throughput.
  • Mentor junior engineers and designers to ensure consistent application of engineering standards and best practices.

What We Look For

Required

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent in Electrical or Controls Engineering.
  • 5+ years of electrical engineering experience in HVAC or a closely related product‑based manufacturing environment.
  • Strong working knowledge of NEC, UL 1995, and UL 60335‑2‑40 as applied to equipment wiring, protection devices, and accessibility.
  • Proficiency creating two‑dimensional electrical schematics using AutoCAD or similar tools, with the ability to interpret drawings, diagrams, and wiring requirements.
  • Experience working with electrical bills of material, component databases, and engineering documentation systems.

Preferred

  • Hands‑on experience supporting prototype builds and laboratory testing of motors, drives, heaters, controllers, and safety devices.
  • Familiarity with A2L refrigerant detection systems, wiring practices, and control responses.
  • Experience supporting configurable product platforms and dynamic BOM logic.
  • 3D CAD experience with SolidWorks.
  • Prior experience mentoring engineers or designers.
