Job Title:

Test Equipment Systems Engineer

Reporting To:

Director, Eng. Sys. Def. & Integ.

Work Schedule:

Hybrid – Buffalo, NY

As a Test Equipment Systems Engineer, you will…

  • Define and lead the end‑to‑end architecture, design, development, and sustainment of Moog’s Iron Bird (IB) Test Equipment laboratory—ensuring it serves as a high‑fidelity platform for aircraft‑level system integration, verification, validation, troubleshooting, and experimental testing.

  • Establish the complete Test Equipment system architecture, including system‑level requirements, functional block diagrams, fidelity definitions, physical layout, harnessing strategy, control loading, and subsystem integration approaches.

  • Lead multidisciplinary system integration across hydraulics, flight controls, electrical power systems, mechanical assemblies, and software‑based systems to ensure seamless interaction and accurate representation of aircraft behavior.

  • Architect the real‑time simulation and Hardware‑in‑the‑Loop (HIL) environments, including real‑time processors, data acquisition systems, modeling frameworks, and automated test execution tools.

  • Drive high‑level troubleshooting of complex aircraft‑system interactions, resolving discrepancies between hardware, software, and simulated environments to ensure Test Equipment reflects aircraft performance, timing, power distribution, network architectures, and control laws.

  • Develop and manage the execution plan for Iron Bird build‑out, including wiring strategy, integration sequencing, commissioning steps, and verification procedures.

  • Coordinate with global Test Equipment engineering teams—mechanical, electrical, software, simulation, and test—to ensure subsystem deliverables align with system-level Test Equipment requirements.

  • Oversee the installation, calibration, network setup, configuration control, and long‑term sustainment of Test Equipment in a live lab environment.

  • Provide technical leadership for aircraft‑level test campaigns, regression testing, failure mode evaluations, and verification of safety‑critical behaviors; may also support lower‑level actuation and component‑rig Test Equipment.

  • Ensure Iron Bird lab capabilities meet requirements of ARP 4754A, DO‑178C, DO‑254, DO‑160, and other applicable aerospace or domain standards.

  • Collaborate closely with chief engineers, systems owners, simulation specialists, test engineers, and program leadership across all Moog Commercial Aircraft Group sites.

  • Present architecture decisions, trade studies, system integration plans, and major milestones to executives, chief engineers, and multidisciplinary technical audiences.

  • Manage vendor relationships, procurement specifications, and integration of commercial or custom hardware/software into the lab environment.

To be considered for the Test Equipment Systems Engineer role, here’s what you’ll need to bring with you:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Systems Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a closely related field.

  • 10+ years of experience in aircraft system integration, flight control test environments, Test Equipment development, Iron Bird/rig development, or HIL simulation.

  • Proven ability to derive system‑level Test Equipment requirements from customer or aircraft‑level requirements.

  • Deep understanding of Test Equipment system architecture and large‑scale, multidisciplinary integration environments.

  • Experience designing, developing, or leading major system integration laboratories, aircraft test rigs, or complex engineering test environments.

  • Strong knowledge of aerospace data buses (e.g., ARINC 429/664, MIL‑STD‑1553, CAN, Ethernet), real‑time hardware, and simulation platforms such as dSPACE, NI, Speedgoat, or similar.

  • Ability and willingness to travel between Moog sites to support multi‑site integration and development activities.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in engineering or systems‑related discipline.

  • Experience with lab automation, scripting, or model‑based systems engineering (MBSE).

  • Background using model‑based integration environments or digital engineering ecosystems.

  • Experience leading engineering teams or coordinating multidisciplinary technical projects.

  • Hands‑on experience with Iron Bird systems, Wiring Birds, Brake Rigs, flight control integration rigs, or related aircraft‑test environments.

  • Experience with DOORS or similar requirements‑management systems.

How We Care for You:

  • Financial Rewards: great compensation package, annual profit sharing, matching 401k and the ability to participate in Employee Stock Purchase Plan, Flexible Spending and Health Savings Accounts

  • Work/Life Balance: Flexible paid time off, holidays and parental leave program, relocation assistance
