Job Description:

This role will play a key role in managing and optimizing enterprise database platforms across both on-premises and cloud environments. This role balances hands-on technical database administration with leadership and coordination responsibilities, ensuring high availability, performance, and security of critical data systems. The Assistant Manager will oversee day-to-day database operations, lead continuous improvement initiatives (including cloud adoption), and coordinate with cross-functional teams to meet business and compliance requirements.

Experience & Preferred skills

• 7+ years of database experience, including Banking, Finance, or Insurance.

• Strong hands‑on experience with enterprise databases (Oracle and/or SQL Server preferred).

• Experience with high‑availability and disaster recovery architectures.

• Familiar with regulatory, audit, and compliance requirements in BFSI.

• Cloud database experience is an advantage.

• Scripting or automation experience (PowerShell, Shell, Python) preferred.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, IT, or related field.

• Relevant certifications (AWS, Oracle, Microsoft) are a plus.

Responsibilities

Database Operations & Reliability

• Manage day‑to‑day operations of enterprise databases (e.g. Oracle, SQL Server, PostgreSQL, DB2).

• Ensure high availability, performance, capacity planning, backup, and disaster recovery.

• Oversee database upgrades, patching, and lifecycle management.

• Lead incident response, problem management, and root cause analysis.

• Maintain monitoring, alerting, and operational documentation (runbooks/standard operating procedures) to meet service levels.

Security & Compliance

• Ensure database environments comply with internal policies and regulatory requirements.

• Implement database hardening, strong access controls, encryption, and security best practices.

• Support internal and external audits and regulatory reviews.

• Produce and maintain audit evidence (e.g., access reviews, patch records, backup/restore proof, DR test results) and remediate findings.

Change & Release Support

• Support database changes, deployments, and schema updates in accordance with change management processes.

• Partner with application teams to review database designs, data models, and proposed changes for performance and risk.

• Prepare implementation plans, validation steps, and back‑out plans; provide post‑implementation reporting as required.

Architecture & Modernization

• Define and maintain database standards across on‑premise and cloud platforms.

• Support cloud database adoption and migrations (Azure, AWS, Alicloud, Oracle Cloud).

• Review application designs for performance, scalability, and data integrity.

• Drive automation and continuous improvement.

• Develop reference architectures and patterns for HA/DR, backup, monitoring, and security; promote reuse across projects.

Vendor & Stakeholder Management

• Oversee license compliance and cost optimization.

• Partner with application, infrastructure, cloud, and business teams.

• Provide clear communication and reporting to management.

Team Leadership

• Lead and mentor database administrators and engineers.

• Establish operational procedures, runbooks, and best practices.
