Position Overview

The Shortage Data Scientist will report to the Director of Shortage Analysis and support the team in leveraging internal and external data to understand the drivers of merchandise shortage across the company. They will take a lead role in measuring the impact of initiatives designed to reduce shortage and be a key contributor to determining how best to allocate resources to address shortage.

The Shortage Data Scientist will assist in maintaining a database of all shortage focused projects and track their expected and realized impact. Will be expected to partner cross-functionally to understand initiatives, including their operational design and business impact, and leverage this understanding in evaluating and communicating findings to influence decision making.

The Shortage Data Scientist will support the team in preparing to present shortage trends and findings following each inventory cycle. They will also assist in preparing materials to communicate their findings in a clear and actionable manner to executive leadership.

In addition to supporting shortage analyses, they will be own measuring the impact of different investments (including those related to shortage) on sales. The Shortage Data Scientist will leverage tools to conduct tests measuring the sales impact of selected projects brought to the Capital Committee. They will manage the data for these projects and prepare their findings clearly for project owners and those on the Capital Committee.

The Data Scientist will seek guidance from the Director of Shortage Analysis as well as the Senior Data Scientist as it pertains to project output and code.

A Day in the Life

  • Assist in maintaining, cleaning and organizing disparate datasets including a database of all shortage focused initiatives. 
  • Assist in tracking and measuring the targeted and actual impact of shortage improvement initiatives over time, leveraging AB testing and predictive modeling.
  • Contribute to developing materials for post-PI executive results meetings to clearly communicate new trends and learnings following each inventory cycle.
  • Own the task of measuring the sales impact of Asset Protection, as well as other Capital projects, levering in house tools/systems.

You'll Come With

Education: Bachelor’s degree required, preferably in a STEM or data driven field.  Training in data science preferred. 

Experience: 3-5 years of experience in data science and analytics. 1-2 years of AB testing and predictive modeling experience preferred.  Retail experience preferred.

Skills and Abilities: 

  • Experience in using multiple data sources to model complex business situations.
  • Experience cleaning, organizing, and maintaining disparate datasets
  • Proficient in R or Python
  • Experience using GitHub to maintain and update code
  • Proficient in data visualization tool such as PowerBI or Tableau
  • Strong written and verbal communication with emphasis on strong inter-personal skills.
  • Proven ability to work independently to drive projects to completion.
  • Retail experience with shortage focus preferred.  
  • Proficient Excel skills.  Proficient with PowerPoint. 
  • Databricks experience preferred.
  • Experience with test and learn sales analytics tools, preferred.  

Physical Requirements: 

  • Must be capable of sitting and operating a computer for long periods.
  • Must have ready access to personal transportation, as job requires driving short distances between corporate facilities on a regular basis (costs reimbursed through mileage allowance).

Compensation Range: $80,000.00 - $105,000.00
