Role Summary

Checkout.com is seeking a talented and dynamic Legal Counsel with a strong global employment law background to join our Employment Legal team. This role will involve advising on the full spectrum of employment law issues across our global business.

You will work closely with our People Team and other key stakeholders in our offices around the globe. This is a great opportunity to develop your skills as a global employment lawyer, playing a key role in supporting the company with employees across UK, EMEA, APAC and the Americas as we grow and mature.  You will need to take a consultative and collaborative approach to handling complex and varied employment law issues. You will be responsible for leading advice in a number of these countries, as well as collaborating on other global employment law projects.

You’ll advise on a full range of employment-related issues, including but not limited to hiring, contractual issues, policies, compensation and benefits (including an employee share scheme), HR compliance, restrictive covenants, performance management, misconduct investigations, employee relations, terminations and employment litigation.  You’ll help the employment law team develop processes and templates to address employment issues in a practical and efficient way, including through the use of AI tools.

You will be able to handle multiple areas of responsibilities autonomously, demonstrating excellent critical judgment with hands-on approach. You will report into our Associate General Counsel (Head of Employment) based in London.

You will be joining a high-achieving legal team in one of Europe's most valuable fintechs. Our mission is to be the best legal team in the world, providing pragmatic and commercially focused advice, finding creative solutions to manage risk and becoming trusted advisers to our colleagues in the business.

Essential Qualifications:

  • UK qualified lawyer

  • 4+ years PQE as an employment lawyer (no upper limit and we also welcome applicants at Senior Legal Counsel level)

  • Within a commutable distance from our offices and happy working in the office as necessary under our hybrid working policy (currently three days per week, on scheduled office days).

Strong candidates will demonstrate the following:

  • Experience as in-house employment counsel in a global business.

  • Experience advising on employment law in other jurisdictions in which we operate (with external counsel support where needed). French and/or Americas (US, Mexico, Brazil, Canada) employment law experience would be a particular benefit.

  • Work with a high-growth technology or another fast-paced company.

  • Exceptional analytical and writing skills, with a business-centric focus on risk.

  • Excellent time management skills and experience managing a diverse workload and competing stakeholder demands.

  • Strong communication skills and the ability to articulate and explain complex legal issues clearly and concisely.

  • Enthusiasm for new challenges and working with a range of different stakeholders.

  • Be a systemic thinker with proven abilities for process improvement and simplification, including AI.

  • Comfortable with ambiguity, constant change, and a fast-paced culture.

Role Type and Location

This is a permanent and full-time role based in London. Under our current hybrid working policy, office attendance is mandatory on 3 days per week.
