Description of Work
The North Carolina Forest Service is designated as an emergency response Division and is a team of professionals who provide forest protection, resource management and environmental education to the residents and landowners of North Carolina through a variety of programs. The NC Forest Service provides services to the 100 counties in North Carolina.The primary job functions of this position are:
• Maintains and repairs heavy equipment, as well as trouble shoots complex mechanical problems including diesel and gasoline engines, transmissions, final drives, hydraulics, brakes and undercarriage problems.
• Will need to use and comprehend repair manuals and schematics.
• Provide irrigation equipment repair including electric, PTO and engine driven pumps as well as repair and maintain specialized forestry equipment and will also provide welding and metal fabrication.
Environmental exposures are adverse weather, forest pests, hunters, intense heat, dust and smoke. Work hours are typically 8-5, Mon-Fri. Some work functions require evening, holiday and/or weekend work. Wildfire & disaster/emergency response functions require readiness 24/7. Some overnight travel required for emergency response and/or training.

Duty Station Location: 2958 Rouse Road Extension, Kinston, NC 28504
Employee must operate a state vehicle and have a valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver’s License.
Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training or employer sponsored training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire.
Pre-employment drug testing is required for this position.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences
Recruitment Range- $35,596-$62,294
- Knowledge of OSHA and safety regulations including shop and equipment safety.
- Experience using various mechanical, electrical and computer systems.
- Ability to do heavy lifting and pulling when required as related to mechanical duties.
- Experience in repair and maintenance of automotive or heavy equipment: welding and fabrication, automotive painting and operation of heavy equipment.
- Basic computer skills, i.e. email, internet, database.

Minimum Education and Experience

High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma or a sufficient year-for-year combination of education and experience in the repair work to which assigned, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Necessary Special Qualifications: May require current certification by the EPA as a Type I, II, III or Universal technician as required by 40 CFR part 82, subpart F.
