Job Summary

Caterpillar is seeking a highly qualified Senior Functional Consultant – Dynamics 365 Project Operations (PMA) to support the full functional lifecycle of the Caterpillar Enterprise ERP template for Caterpillar Dealers and internal delivery organizations.

The ERP solution is built on Microsoft Dynamics 365 Project Operations integrated with Finance & Operations (F&O). This role will focus on Project Management, Project Accounting, Resource Management, Time & Expense, Revenue Recognition, and Billing, ensuring standardized, scalable, and compliant project delivery solutions across global implementations.

The ideal candidate will lead endtoend Project Operations implementations, drive solution design aligned with Microsoft best practices, and enable business transformation by optimizing project delivery, financial governance, and operational efficiency.

What You Will Do

Functional Ownership & Solution Strategy

  • Own the functional vision and roadmap for D365 Project Operations (PMA) aligned with Caterpillar’s project delivery and financial governance strategies.
  • Translate complex business requirements into scalable Project Operations and F&O solutions.
  • Partner with Finance, PMO, Operations, and IT stakeholders to define project lifecycle, costing models, revenue recognition, billing methods, and compliance frameworks.
  • Drive solution alignment across Project Operations, Finance, Supply Chain, and HR modules.

System Ownership – Project Operations

  • Configure and manage Dynamics 365 Project Operations (Lightweight and Integrated deployment).
  • Lead functional design for:
  • Project contracts and funding sources
  • Work Breakdown Structures (WBS)
  • Project costing, budgeting, and forecasting
  • Time & Expense management
  • Resource scheduling and utilization
  • Revenue recognition and billing (T&M, Fixed Price, Milestone-based)
  • Ensure seamless integration with D365 Finance & Operations for GL, AR, AP, Cost Accounting, and Financial Reporting.

Project Management & Accounting (PMA) Expertise

  • Define and implement:
  • Project accounting structures and financial dimensions
  • Cost control, capitalization, and margin analysis
  • IFRS/GAAP-aligned revenue recognition rules
  • Project invoicing, retainers, and credit notes
  • Support multi-company, multi-currency, and multi-legal entity project scenarios.
  • Ensure audit readiness, SOX compliance, and financial accuracy across project operations.

Requirements Definition & Functional Design

  • Lead fit/gap analysis for Project Operations and Finance workstreams.
  • Author:
  • Functional Design Documents (FDDs)
  • Process flows
  • User stories and acceptance criteria
  • Collaborate with architects and developers to confirm technical feasibility and performance optimization.
  • Provide functional guidance on data migration, cutover, and reporting design.

Delivery, Testing & Execution

  • Prepare and execute CRP, SIT, UAT, and Go‑Live activities for Project Operations solutions.
  • Create and validate test scenarios covering:
  • End‑to‑end project lifecycle
  • Financial postings and sub-ledger reconciliation
  • Billing and revenue recognition scenarios
  • Support defect triage, root cause analysis, and resolution across PMA processes.

Release & Environment Management

  • Partner with cross‑functional teams to manage dependencies across Project Operations and Finance releases.
  • Support Azure DevOps for backlog management, sprint planning, and delivery tracking.
  • Participate in release planning, regression testing coordination, and production validation.

Stakeholder & Change Management

  • Act as the functional subject‑matter expert (SME) for Project Operations & Project Accounting.
  • Build strong relationships with Finance leads, PMOs, Dealers, and System Integrators.
  • Drive process standardization and adoption across project delivery organizations.
  • Support change impact assessments and mitigation plans.

User Training & Support

  • Develop training materials, user guides, and playbooks for Project Operations users.
  • Conduct functional training sessions for Project Managers, Finance Teams, and Resource Managers.
  • Support post‑go‑live stabilization and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Collaborate with training departments to deliver Sales & Marketing training programs and provide ongoing support.
  • Assist in resolving or remediating CE issues, ensuring smooth dealer operations.

What You Will Have

ERP & Dynamics 365 Expertise

  • Deep hands‑on experience with:
    • Dynamics 365 Project Operations (PMA)
    • Dynamics 365 Finance (Project Accounting integration)
  • Strong understanding of project-centric ERP implementations.
  • Experience with Power Platform (Power Automate, Power BI) for project reporting and automation.
  • Working knowledge of Dataverse, Dual Write, and data migration strategies.

Project Management & Accounting Knowledge

  • Strong understanding of:
    • Project lifecycle management
    • Project budgeting, costing, and forecasting
    • Time & Expense management
    • Revenue recognition and billing
  • Experience supporting KPIs such as:
    • Project margin
    • Utilization
    • Project variance
    • Revenue leakage

Decision Making & Problem Solving

  • Analytical mindset with ability to interpret project and financial data.
  • Skilled in identifying risks, financial exposure, and optimization opportunities within project portfolios.
  • Ability to assess system interdependencies across PMA, Finance, and Operations.

Communication & Leadership

  • Excellent stakeholder communication and documentation skills.
  • Ability to translate complex accounting and project concepts into business‑friendly terms.
  • Experience facilitating workshops, design reviews, and executive presentations.
  • Collaborative and consultative approach.

Delivery & Agile Experience

  • Proven experience working in Agile / SAFe delivery environments.
  • Skilled in backlog prioritization, sprint execution, and cross‑team coordination.
  • Comfortable balancing functional depth with delivery speed.

Experience

  • 8–10+ years in ERP solution delivery.
  • 5–7+ years handson with Dynamics 365 Project Operations / Finance.
  • Experience in multiple endtoend D365 implementations (minimum 3 fullcycle PMA projects).
  • Exposure to global rollouts, regulated industries, and enterprise-scale programs.

Certifications (Preferred)

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Business, Finance, IT, or related discipline.
  • MB500 / MB700 (Dynamics 365 Finance / Project Operations preferred)
  • PMI / PMP / Prince2 – desirable
  • MB300: Core Finance and Operations
