Job Description

The Company

Versaterm is a global public safety solutions company helping agencies transform how they serve their communities. Since 1977, we’ve been building an ecosystem of intuitive tools designed for public safety agencies, forensic labs, court systems, schools and other institutions. Through purposeful integrations and a selective growth strategy, we focus on improving workflows to help our customers achieve more efficient operations, better service and more just outcomes.

Our teams are driven by innovation, expertise and an unwavering commitment to customer success. As we continue to grow and expand our ecosystem, you’ll have the opportunity to contribute to solutions that enhance community safety and transform the future of public safety technology. If you’re passionate about making a meaningful difference, we’d love to hear from you.

Versaterm is launching a new standalone Digital Evidence Management System, and we’re assembling a team to build its foundation from the ground up. We’re designing the product direction, architecture, and technology stack while developing shared services that will support secure, compliant, and auditable digital evidence management across agencies and jurisdictions.

This is a unique chance to join a new team early, contribute to key architectural and product decisions, and help establish engineering patterns that will scale across Versaterm’s broader product suite.

The Role

As a Software Engineer II, you will be responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining software applications, working on both backend and frontend systems, and contributing to the overall growth and innovation of our public safety product offerings. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver high-quality solutions while continuously improving your technical expertise.

What You'll Do

  • Design, implement, test, and maintain high‑quality software solutions that align with business needs, with a focus on clean, maintainable, and well‑documented code.
  • Practice and contribute to Spec‑Driven Development, collaborating with product and design partners to define clear, testable specifications (e.g., APIs, contracts, acceptance criteria) before implementation, and using those specs to guide development, testing, and long‑term maintainability.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve software defects, productions issues, and technical problems.
  • Contribute to the design and evolution of software applications, ensuring scalability, reliability, and performance.
  • Apply company standards, technologies, and best practices to continuously improve development workflows and product quality.
  • Provide guidance and support to junior engineers, reviewing code and offering constructive feedback to foster team growth.
  • Participate in the team’s development process, including sprint planning, standups, and retrospectives. Communicate effectively with team members and stakeholders.

What You'll Bring

  • Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent industry experience and training.
  • 2-5 years of professional experience in software development, ideally in a modern web or cloud environment.
  • Proficiency in one or more modern programming languages (e.g., Python, TypeScript), with the ability to work across a full‑stack codebase.
  • Experience building modern web applications across the stack, including front‑end frameworks (e.g., React, Angular) and back‑end services using frameworks such as Flask or Node.js.
  • Experience with relational and/or NoSQL databases such as PostgreSQL, Redis, or similar, including writing queries and working with ORMs.
  • Proficiency with Git and common branching, pull request, and code review workflows.
  • Familiarity with unit and integration testing frameworks (i.e. Jest, Playwright, PyTest) and a solid understanding of testable design.
  • Strong analytical and debugging skills with a focus on problem-solving and solution delivery.
  • Familiarity with agile development practices, including Scrum or Kanban.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work in a team-oriented environment.
