Job Summary


We are seeking a skilled Compliance Lawyer -Senior Corporate Counsel to join Global Compliance Legal Team.

The Incumbent would have the exciting opportunity to provide legal support on a broad range of compliance matters in India and parts of Southeast Asia. The role offers a unique opportunity to become a trusted legal and compliance adviser to all of Caterpillar’s businesses that operate in those regions, will be expected to be a compliance focussed professional who partners with business teams, legal professionals and other stakeholders to deliver proactive and innovative legal support across a wide range of compliance matters.  A proven track record of working with limited supervision on complex India related compliance matters, and providing practical and commercially focused advice, is essential.  

This role will be part of a small global team and will report to a manager located in India. 

The preference for this role is to be based out of Whitefield Office, Bangalore, India

What you will do

  • Monitor the external regulatory environment across India and parts of Southeast Asia and proactively advise on the impact of regulatory developments.

  • Manage and counsel business clients on pre and post litigation especially Indirect tax and other related trade matters and issues.

  • Provide day-to-day legal advice on compliance matters.

  • Advise on interactions with government authorities.

  • Support Caterpillar’s global compliance program initiatives.  For example, by delivering compliance training and supporting the development of new policies, processes, procedures and programs.

  • Manage relationships with, and work of, external counsel.

  • Manage travel and external counsel budgets.

 What you will have

  • Problem Solving: Knowledge of approaches, tools, techniques for recognizing, anticipating, and resolving organizational, operational or process problems; ability to apply knowledge of problem solving appropriately to diverse situations
  • Collaboration: Ability to collaborate vertically and horizontally, across levels and various business functions, and with external parties.
  • Resource Management: Knowledge of the resources required to achieve business objectives; ability to plan, mobilize and distribute resources to fulfill business objectives and plans; ability to work effectively and efficiently with outside counsel.
  • Legal Analysis: Knowledge of methods and tools used in legal analysis; ability to read, interpret and draw accurate conclusions from both legal and factual information

Education and Experience Required:

  • LL.B qualification from an accredited college/university or a law school in India with strong academic credentials; The Master of Laws (LL.M.) is preferred.
  • Legal Professional Certificate and considerable experience in the law practice in India.
  • A minimum 10 years of legal advisory experience as an In-house counsel of a large conglomerate and/or a reputed law firm.
  • Demonstrated experience advising on compliance, regulatory and litigation matters in India.
  • Demonstrated experience supporting Indirect tax and other related trade matters
  • A demonstrated record of interpreting and communicating the substance of complex law issues and the ability to manage multiple projects with minimal supervision.
  • Proficiency English language skills in speaking and writing, especially good legal writing skills.

Additional Info:

  • The primary location for this position is Caterpillar’s Whitefield Office in Bangalore, India
  • Required in the office 5 days a week.
  • Visa sponsorship is not available for this position
  • International and domestic travel will be required from time to time.

• Participates in discussions with professionals in order to break down legal issues into understandable concepts.
• Selects legal documents and research tools to be utilized by the legal department.
• Interprets major types of legal analysis required by the organization.

Legal Function: Knowledge of the major responsibilities, accountabilities, and organization of the legal function or department; ability to provide legal consulting, advice and assistance.
Level Working Knowledge:
• Works with major units or sub-functions of the legal department.
• Monitors major current legal challenges, initiatives and issues.
• Works with common transactions and documents processed by the legal department.
• Explains the mission, vision and objectives of the legal function.
• Adheres to organizational standards and procedures for the legal department.

Decision Making and Critical Thinking: Knowledge of the decision-making process and associated tools and techniques; ability to accurately analyze situations and reach productive decisions based on informed judgment.
