Job Description

Toast creates technology to help restaurants and local businesses succeed in a digital world, helping business owners operate, increase sales, engage customers, and keep employees happy.

We are seeking a Senior Data Engineer to build out holistic data pipelines, services and infrastructure in order to power guest-centric insights and data driven-decisions across guest and consumer facing product lines. This role requires architecting and developing a source of truth comprising comprehensive, non-financial metrics from the guest’s vantage point. Metrics include tabular reports and event-based analytics that measure activation, retention, referral, and engagement to help stakeholders drive experiments and make decisions.

This is a hands-on role that sits at the intersection of teams including product, engineering and marketing across the consumer and core (B2B) teams. You’ll partner with data scientists, product managers, and marketers to define the guest journey in data. Most importantly, you’ll deliver scalable insights that the consumer team can use to acquire, retain and delight guests of Toast restaurants.

A day in the life (Responsibilities)

  • Consumer Metrics & Reporting

    • Work with teams that own guest facing products to define, maintain and improve guest-centric KPIs including activation, retention and engagement.
    • Architect and develop clear “sources of truth” for tabular and event-based guest data to ensure alignment across the organization. Build the infrastructure, pipelines and services that makes this data usable for data-driven decision making.
    • Build dashboards and recurring reports that surface insights for product, growth and lifecycle marketing teams.
  • Analytics & Experimentation

    • Support A/B testing and experimentation by providing pre- and post-test documentation and reporting.
    • Partner with product managers and marketers to evaluate the impact of new features and campaigns upon the customer journey.
    • Translate raw data into actionable insights that inform decision-making.

  • Cross-Functional Collaboration

    • Partner with engineers to ensure guest events are tracked and instrumented accurately.
    • Work with marketing and lifecycle teams to deliver audience insights that guide campaign targeting and personalization.
    • Collaborate with data scientists on deeper analyses and predictive modeling projects.

  • Visualization & Storytelling

    • Create intuitive dashboards and data visualizations that highlight key results.
    • Clearly communicate findings to technical and non-technical stakeholders on the consumer team and across the broader organization.
    • Ensure reporting is accessible and actionable for day-to-day decision-making.
    • Leverage cutting edge AI tools to enhance your development workflow, improve velocity, and help pioneer new approaches to building - contributing to a culture of innovation and productivity across the team.

What you'll need to thrive (Requirements)

  • 5+ years of experience in data engineering, analytics, business intelligence, or a related role.
  • Strong SQL skills and experience with data visualization tools (e.g. Sigma, Tableau, Looker).
  • Experience analyzing event-based data (Amplitude, Heap, Mixpanel or similar).
  • Comfort working with large datasets in a modern data warehouse (e.g. Snowflake, BigQuery).
  • Ability to translate complex data into clear, actionable insights for diverse teams.
  • Strong collaboration and communication skills with experience working cross-functionally.
  • Nice to have: experience with integrating data through CEP/CRM/CDP systems (like Braze, HubSpot, Segment, Hightouch, Simon Data etc).
