Job Description

What you will be doing:

We are looking for a dynamic and experienced Engineering Manager to join our innovative Tech Team leading the entity resolution platform. You will collaborate across functions, engaging in both the design and implementation of high-performance systems crucial for detecting financial risks.

ComplyAdvantage has built a financial crime knowledge graph to power our anti money laundering products. We feed this graph with facts extracted from millions of media articles daily, tens of thousands of websites with information about political exposure and thousands of watchlists and sanction lists, and we augment this with additional web crawling to enrich the entities we extract and to add relatives and close associates.

This ingestion process generates millions of new entities daily, many of these are the same entities using slightly different naming conventions such as initials vs full name. Entity resolution is tasked with linking all related entities. Sometimes the names are fairly common so we have to use other features to determine if this is a particular entity and there are many other complexities such as dealing with the same identifiers expressed in different languages and multiple transliterations. The entity resolution process also has to match all incoming entities to entities in the large global knowledge graph we already have, so we have put a lot of work into algorithms that avoid N squared scaling dynamics and balanced that with latency and cost considerations.

This role would suit someone that enjoys the challenge of overseeing and contributing to the design of a large scale data intensive application, event centric architecture using Kafka brokers, the development and evolution of both custom models and LLMs and even some front end engineering for human in the loop review processes. And of course as a manager you will need to be great at supporting your team’s engineers to grow their skills and careers, as well as collaborating with product management to continuously evolve our ambitious product offerings.

As an Engineering Manager, you will:

  • Take ownership for your team, being responsible for current team members growth and development, plus hiring and onboarding new team members
  • Foster a positive and thriving work environment that promotes innovation.
  • Mentor and coach your team, maintaining a learning mindset and openness to new ideas and technologies.
  • Set the direction for your team and take accountability for tech decisions.
  • Work alongside with your product counterpart, being accountable for delivery against the roadmap.
  • Collaborate, both within your team and across the tribe to ensure your team’s implementation meets industry standards.
  • Report to the Director of Engineering, and will work with the other Engineering Managers in the tribe.  Working as a group, you will own cross-team initiatives and improvements.

Our Tech Stack:

  • Our technology stack is designed to run on public cloud architectures, notably AWS and GCP
  • The wider organisation supports 3 broad languages, Kotlin and Python for the backend and TypeScript/ES6 for our frontend stack built on React
  • We make substantial use of relational database technologies, notably Postgres, Yugabyte as well as Spark to scale our big data processing
  • We also use an event-sourced model powered by Kafka for our communication bus and gRPC for our intra-service communication protocol
  • We use modern observability solutions from Grafana Cloud and deploy our code using ArgoCD

We have a strong emphasis on engineering excellence and strive to ship the best possible code and the best possible solutions to our customers

About you

As an Engineering Manager, you will have:

  • Proven experience in managing and growing high-performing engineering teams.
  • Strong knowledge of engineering best practices, including architecture and testing.
  • Past or current experience preferably in Python, or any experience that demonstrates a strong understanding of software engineering at scale
