Job Description

Ready to be pushed beyond what you think you’re capable of?

At Coinbase, our mission is to increase economic freedom in the world. It’s a massive, ambitious opportunity that demands the best of us, every day, as we build the emerging onchain platform — and with it, the future global financial system.

To achieve our mission, we’re seeking a very specific candidate. We want someone who is passionate about our mission and who believes in the power of crypto and blockchain technology to update the financial system. We want someone who is eager to leave their mark on the world, who relishes the pressure and privilege of working with high caliber colleagues, and who actively seeks feedback to keep leveling up. We want someone who will run towards, not away from, solving the company’s hardest problems.

Our work culture is intense and isn’t for everyone. But if you want to build the future alongside others who excel in their disciplines and expect the same from you, there’s no better place to be.

While many roles at Coinbase are remote-first, we are not remote-only. In-person participation is required throughout the year. Team and company-wide offsites are held multiple times annually to foster collaboration, connection, and alignment. Attendance is expected and fully supported.

We're hiring an Engineering Manager to lead a team within Simple Trade, part of the Consumer Product Group. Simple Trade owns Coinbase's core retail trading experience — and we're at an exciting inflection point, expanding from crypto into equities. You'll build and lead an engineering team shipping cross-asset trading systems, unified account infrastructure, and new regulatory integrations — greenfield work on top of Coinbase's scale. This is a rare opportunity to define core trading infrastructure from the ground up while delivering products that handle real money at low latency for millions of users.

Ownership & impact

In this role, you will:

  • Build and lead a high-performing engineering team, guiding the development of features, services, and infrastructure across web and mobile that power Coinbase's retail trading experience.
  • Own the technical roadmap for your team's area, driving execution on cross-asset trading systems (crypto and equities), unified account infrastructure, and regulatory integrations — translating product vision into technical delivery.
  • Partner cross-functionally with Product, Design, and senior leadership to ensure alignment between business goals and engineering priorities, and to drive clarity on the path forward in a fast-paced, ambiguous environment.
  • Coach and develop your direct reports, supporting their career growth and enabling them to have a positive impact on the organization. Set a high bar for talent and partner with Recruiting to hire exceptional engineers.
  • Drive engineering excellence by making thoughtful architectural decisions, fostering a culture of high-quality code, and ensuring your team meets engineering SLAs for reliability, performance, and operational health.
  • Be a hands-on technical leader when needed — participating in design reviews, code reviews, and diving deep across the stack to unblock your team and maintain technical credibility.

Minimum qualifications

  • 7+ years of experience in software engineering, with significant experience building and operating distributed systems at web scale.
  • 2+ years of engineering management experience, with a track record of building, coaching, and retaining high-performing teams.
  • Experience designing, building, and maintaining production services that evolve over time — including systems that handle real money, low latency, and high availability.
  • Strong technical judgment and the ability to balance long-term strategic thinking with short-term execution.
  • Proven ability to partner cross-functionally with Product and Design, translating ambiguous product goals into clear technical plans.
  • Experience creating, delivering, and operating multi-tenanted, distributed systems at
