About the Team 

The Advanced Development organisation pushes beyond the boundaries of product lines to build new things. We think independently of standard shipping cadences and timelines, working on foundational technologies that will impact every Roku device in the future, and on ideas that no one has seen before in their living room. The team works technologies including modern Linux embedded C++, build systems, cloud backend systems, and web platforms.

 

About the role

Join our team as a Software Engineer Intern, where your passion for technology and creativity will drive our success. We offer a paid 12-week internship, starting in Summer 2026.

We’ll tailor the project to achieve the best outcome for your time with us, one idea that we’re excited about is building a community-ready Model Context Protocol (MCP) server for Roku Cloud Emulator that lets external developers manage virtual Roku devices through AI assistants like Claude. We have an internal proof-of-concept that works but needs to be rebuilt from scratch for public distribution. Our platform emulation product runs a software only version of the Roku OS which represents real hardware, but facilities wider scale testing accessed via cloud hosting.  

 

What you’ll be doing

  • Owning a project that contributes to the success of making our emulation product available to external developers through AI assistances
  • Collaborating with engineers across different functional areas to ensure robust delivery.

 

We’re excited if you have

  • Currently enrolled in a degree program in Computer Science/Engineering or related field.
  • Evidence of developing with Typescript, JavaScript and using Node.js.
  • Familiarity with API design and development; experience with MCP servers is a plus
  • Interest in LLM tooling and how AI assistants interact with external systems
  • Strong software development mindset producing robust and tested open-source software solutions
  • Strong problem-solving and technical communication abilities
  • Proactive mindset with passion for continuous learning and fast iteration

 

Our Hybrid Work Approach

Roku fosters an inclusive and collaborative environment where teams work in the office Monday through Thursday. Fridays are flexible for remote work except for employees whose roles are required to be in the office five days a week or employees who are in offices with a five day in office policy.
