Software Engineering Leader / Tech Lead

Why this role matters:

 

We are seeking a Software Engineering Lead to lead one of our engineering tribes, comprising multiple squads, within our Data Services group.

This is a leadership role with a strong hands-on technical focus. You will provide both people leadership and technical direction, while remaining actively involved in system design, architecture, and coding. You’ll lead by example—setting the standard for engineering excellence across the tribe.

The team is responsible for our data and billing pipelines, which sit at the core of our CPaaS platform. These services underpin all API products and process high volumes of real-time data. The domain spans both legacy systems and greenfield initiatives, offering a wide range of architectural and design challenges.

As a senior leader, you will also act as a trusted advisor to the Director of Engineering, contributing to and helping drive the ongoing transformation of the organisation.

What You’ll Do

• Lead an engineering tribe of multiple squads, providing both people and technical leadership
• Remain hands-on – contributing to code, design, and technical problem-solving
• Own and drive architecture and system design decisions across data-intensive services
• Build, mentor, and grow engineers, fostering a high-performance engineering culture
• Ensure consistent, high-quality delivery across the full software development lifecycle
• Partner with Product to shape the roadmap and deliver customer value
• Act as a technical escalation point for complex challenges
• Look beyond your teams to improve engineering practices across the organisation

What You’ll Bring

• Proven experience in a technical leadership role (Tech Lead, Lead Engineer, or Engineering Manager)
• Strong hands-on coding ability – comfortable writing and reviewing production code
• Experience balancing people leadership with technical contribution
• A product mindset – able to engage with customers, demo systems, and shape direction
• Strong understanding of architecture and distributed systems design
• A value-driven, principled approach to engineering and decision-making
• Experience working within Agile environments and modern delivery practices

 Technical Experience

• Strong experience in at least one of: Java, Golang, Kotlin, Python (or similar)
• Experience building data pipelines (real-time processing, transformations, high-volume systems)
• Familiarity with Kafka, RabbitMQ, Flink, Pinot or similar technologies
• Experience with cloud infrastructure (AWS preferred)
• Strong system design and platform architecture experience
• Understanding of security best practice
• Experience with Kubernetes or similar container orchestration platforms
