Description of Work

You must apply by 11:59 PM prior to the posted closing date.This posting is for a Vehicle Equipment Repair Technician III position located in the Forsyth County Sub-Shop. This position requires skilled mechanical work and will function as a Level III mechanic that may perform mechanical work at various levels. The selected applicant will perform a range of progressively responsible tasks involving service and repair of mechanical systems of gasoline/diesel powered automotive and heavy equipment. Work assignments will vary in complexity depending on the type of mechanical system presented. Must be able to perform: Preventive Maintenance, Tires, and Tubes, Wheel & Rims, Cranking Systems, Lighting Systems, Cooling Systems, Fuel System, and Hydraulic System. This position will act as the back up to the supervisor. Employee is required to furnish a set of mechanics tools.
Additional Expectations:
Position requires work during any adverse weather such as snow and/or ice, tornadoes, hurricanes, etc. which can lead to working extended daily hours, weekends, and holidays. Ability to perform duties of position in accordance with all safety regulations; prepare and maintain paperwork essential to employment, equipment repair, inventory, and service records; understand both written and oral instructions; move parts and material necessary to repair and maintain equipment; and safely operate equipment for testing purposes. Ability to demonstrate commitment to providing a safe working environment by leading by example. Ability to read and interpret Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) manuals. Safety-toed shoes required.
The selected applicant will be expected to legally operate a motor vehicle and have a valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver’s License with Tanker (N) endorsement. Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. Pre-employment drug testing will be required. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substance and alcohol testing.
Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences
Salary Grade and Salary Range: NC10 $43,267 - $75,718
Management prefers applicants with the following:
- Experience in troubleshooting and repair of a minimum of one of the following: light, medium, heavy duty or farm equipment brake components
- Experience in performing preventive maintenance on a minimum of one of the following: light, medium, heavy-duty trucks and heavy equipment.
- Experience in performing electrical/electronic diagnostics and repair of complex wiring on two of the following: light, medium, heavy duty trucks and heavy equipment
- Experience in performing hydraulic system diagnostics, repairs, and rebuilds on a variety of equipment
- Experience in the diagnostics and repair of powertrain components
Minimum Education and Experience

High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and three (3) years of experience in the area of assignment, or a sufficient year-for-year combination of education and experience in the repair work to which assigned; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Necessary Special Requirements May require current certification by the EPA as a Type I, II, III or Universal technician as required by 40 CFR part 82, subpart F.
