The Role

The Design & Build Team Lead (DBT Lead) functions as a technical expert across all programs for the commodity specific parts they are responsible for. The individual also leads a group of Simultaneous Engineers/Formability Engineers and a cross functional team of engineers in the engineering, design and build phase of the die value stream. The DBT Lead is responsible for gathering lessons learned and stamping plant feedback as well as the implementation of engineering, design and build and bring best practices into the commodity. Work is of a very broad nature across the entire GVDP and requires a highly motivated, self-directed, Innovative individual who is comfortable with ambiguity and displays both technical skills, and the ability to lead and influence peers.

What You’ll Do (Responsibilities)

  • Lead, coach, and develop team members; set clear expectations, priorities, and accountability

  • Manage workload, capacity, and resource planning to support program timing and deliverables

  • Partner cross‑functionally with Studio, Product, Engineering, Die Program Management, suppliers, and manufacturing plants to deliver cost, quality, and timing targets

  • Drive continuous improvement by ensuring lessons learned and technical feedback are applied across the commodity

  • Develop, approve, and publish design standards in collaboration with DBT and lead cross‑functional Design & Build Team execution from engineering through production

  • Lead and prioritize Die Engineering resources (SEs/FEs), providing manufacturability assessments using formability analysis, die processing, and MR/GBOP evaluations

  • Resolve engineering, design, and build issues; support DFM and program escalation as needed

  • Own correlation activities (dimensional, surface, process/MR, tonnage) and manage workflow to meet program milestones (MPS, PHF, FPR, VFPR, L1, MMR, P2)

  • Participate in engineering buyoffs, readiness reviews, health checks, gate reviews, peer reviews, and supplier integration activities

  • Collaborate with Press and Manufacturing teams to enable stamping targets; approve deviations and support stamping strategy reviews

  • Review quality alerts, tooling, process change proposals, and pre‑production tooling; support VFPR/FPR events and correlation analysis

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Math, or equivalent

  • 5+ years of combined experience across Die Engineering, Formability, Processing, Design, Verification, Tryout and Production.

  • Strong knowledge of die development, processing, and fundamental die design concepts

  • Working knowledge of formability and simulation software (e.g., AutoForm, Dynaform, PamStamp, LS‑DYNA or similar)

  • Working proficiency with NX, Vis Mockup, and Teamcenter Engineering

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; able to work independently, collaborate effectively, and influence outcomes

  • Strong analytical skills to solve complex, non‑routine problems

  • Deep understanding of tryout events/processes, stamping presses, automation, and simulations

  • Broad expertise in tool and die systems, die‑to‑press interfaces, weld tool systems, checking fixtures, ETACS, and stamping success factors

  • Solid engineering foundation relevant to the role (e.g., CAE, mechanics, physics, materials, manufacturing methods)

What Will Give You a Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)

  • 10+ years of combined experience across Die Engineering, Formability, Processing, Design, Verification, Tryout and Production

  • In depth knowledge of GM Press Systems, Processing, Formability, Die design, Construction and Tryout
