The Role
The Senior UX/UI Designer is responsible for defining and developing end‑to‑end user experiences and user interfaces for in‑vehicle and related digital products that are intuitive, safe, and emotionally compelling for GM brands serving China and global markets. This role leads UX and UI design across the instrument cluster, center display, HUD, steering wheel controls, ambient/lighting behaviors, and connected experiences, from early vision through production execution.
You will work closely with Interior Design, UX Research, CMF, Studio Engineering, ADAS/AV, Infotainment, Product Planning, and JV partner SGM SDB teams to translate customer insights, brand strategy, and technology roadmaps into cohesive cockpit and digital experiences tailored for China. A key responsibility will be working with local partners and the North America software services team to develop software and UX/UI solutions for global production projects, aligning global strategy and translating it for the local China software team.
What You’ll Do
- Lead UX and UI concept development for assigned programs (advanced and production), from early problem framing and scenario definition through detailed interaction and visual design.
- Translate brand positioning, China user insights, and regulatory/safety requirements into clear information architecture, navigation models, and interaction flows.
- Create and review personas, user journeys, wireframes, interactive prototypes, and high‑fidelity UI designs for cluster, center stack, HUD, and auxiliary displays.
- Define and document UX requirements and UI behavior logic, including navigation, media, climate, vehicle status, ADAS/AV states, alerts, and personalization.
- Collaborate with Interior Design and CMF to ensure screens, lighting, and physical controls form a unified, human‑centered in‑cabin experience.
- Work closely with Studio Engineering, software teams, and local development partners to ensure UX/UI concepts are feasible, performant, and robust across hardware, platforms, and markets.
- Drive UX/UI deliverables and reviews in line with the Design GVDP process, including design gates, integration checks, and validation milestones.
- Prepare and present UX/UI work in design reviews, cross‑functional forums, and executive sessions, clearly articulating rationale, tradeoffs, and customer impact.
- Define prototype and validation plans (desktop, in‑vehicle, VR, driving simulators, and usability tests) and support UX research and clinics; synthesize feedback into iterative design improvements.
- Contribute to and help maintain design systems, component libraries, and UX/UI guidelines for consistency across nameplates, platforms, and regions.
- Mentor junior UX/UI and HMI designers, providing day‑to‑day feedback, craft coaching, and best practices on interaction, visual design, and specification quality.
- Stay current on UX, UI, HMI, and digital product trends in automotive and adjacent industries (mobile, consumer electronics, gaming), and inject relevant innovations into GM China experiences.
Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)
- Education (minimum): BA or MA degree in Transportation, Automotive, or Industrial design, or equivalent experience
- Capable of conceptual thinking and cross functional collaborative work
- Desire, ability and dedication of total involvement in a holistic design process
