Coordinates set-ups and oversees the functions of Processing Technicians. Furnishes sterile and non-sterile supplies,
equipment and services for the care and treatment of patients. Adheres to Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare’s
performance expectations and performs all defined services and other related duties in accordance with the mission,
vision and values of Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare.
Major Areas of Responsibility/Essential Function % of Time
- Assists supervisor in overseeing daily operations of department.
- Serves as a resource to others in area of responsibility and expertise.
- Troubleshoots and addresses questions from staff and others in completing daily activities.
- Either directs next steps or resolves.
- Familiar with regulatory requirements and assists with/coordinates the preparation for inspections by various regulatory agencies.
- Communicates to supervisor departmental updates and reports problems on an ongoing basis.
- Offers suggestions to improve services and viable options to resolve problems.
- Contributes to departmental policy and procedural revisions.
- Participates in staff orientation, training and development.
- Ensures that new employees are oriented to department/job and that initial competency is assessed and documented.
- Provides ongoing training on equipment and procedural changes.
- Contributes to staff performance evaluation.
- Provides insight for staff performance evaluation.
- Encourages staff and contributes to staff developmental plan.
- Coordinates surgical supplies.
- Facilitates scheduling of borrowed surgical supplies.
- Arranges transportation of surgical supplies between facilities.
- Completes documentation of borrowed surgical supplies.
- Investigates alternative supply and/or equipment options in an effort to meet needs of customers.
- Calls for servicing of equipment.
- Provides training and orientation to instrument processors.
- Maintains instrument menu cards to ensure correctness and completeness.
- Directs workflow of instrument processors to ensure quality, efficiency and management of department work.
- Coordinates case set-ups.
- Checks picks lists and schedules for accuracy.
- Completes case cart set-ups per pick ticket · Returns unused supplies to appropriate areas.
- Performs quality control for sterilizing equipment.
- Runs required autoclave testing.
- Documents results of testing.
- Takes appropriate steps based on test results.
- Performs, incubates, interprets and records biological test results according to procedure.
- Implements recall procedure when a positive BI is discovered.
- Efficiently, inspects, tests, and assembles, wraps, surgical and non surgical instruments and equipment using menu card. Assuring that filters, locks and proper indicators are in place for processing assurance. Operates steam, gas, and aeration equipment in accordance to policies and procedures. Has the ability to check sterilizer function and parameters to assure processing has been achieved.
- Cleans and sterilizes equipment, surgical instruments.
- Cleans and sterilizes scopes, equipment, and surgical instruments.
- Ensures sterilization machines are working properly.
- Distributes or stores equipment and surgical instruments as appropriate.
- Sets up and checks instrument trays for sterilization.
- Completes soiled equipment rounds and properly cleans and checks patient care machines for function and safety and adds essential accessories are required.
- Receives, sorts and cleans instruments and equipment in accordance with department decontamination best practice.
- Adheres to all safety, infection control and employee health policies and procedures.
- Attends required safety programs.
- Appropriately and consistently uses the personal protective equipment required of the job.
- Knows and can demonstrate departmental emergency procedures for fire, disaster and other emergency situations.
- Actively participates in regularly scheduled drills (Code Red, Green, etc.) and regulatory safety standards.
- Completes and appropriately routes incident reports in a timely manner.
- Uses equipment safely and appropriately.
- Reports and removes unsafe equipment/furniture.
- Asks for assistance when needed to assure safety for all involved.

Required Education
- High School or Equivalent (GED)
Preferred Education
- High School plus specialized training
Experience Level
- Basic Skill Set
- 0–2 years
- 3–4 years – Minimum of 2 years’ experience working with surgical instruments and assisting in patient care.
