Engineering Manager: Backend & Architecture (Hands-on)

Why this role matters:

We are looking for a Software Engineering Manager to lead one of our engineering tribes. In this role, you will provide leadership across the full development lifecycle, ensuring the delivery of high-quality products and services while partnering with Engineering Leadership as a trusted advisor to shape strategy and execution.

You will lead a team responsible for the systems at the core of our services (voice and numbers) that power our API products and process high volumes of data. The work spans both legacy platforms and greenfield initiatives, offering a unique mix of technical challenges and design opportunities.

Your key responsibilities:

• Take a value-driven, principle-based approach rather than relying on rigid or dogmatic practices
• Contribute to architecture discussions, bringing technical depth and collaborative problem-solving skills
• Manage and mentor a team of engineers with a people-first mindset, fostering growth, collaboration, and high performance
• Drive improvements across the wider organisation beyond your team’s immediate scope
• Champion DevOps, Agile, and Lean software development practices
• Continuously improve code quality, processes, documentation, and team interactions

What you'll bring

• 9+ years of backend engineering experience with proven technical leadership with people management.
• Strong hands-on coding experience: Vonage managers are technical leaders who can both write and review code fluently
• Experience working within Agile environments and a solid understanding of modern software delivery practices
• Strong architectural understanding with the ability to actively participate in design discussions
• Proficiency in Java and Spring Boot
• Experience with AWS or other cloud platforms
• Experience with Kubernetes or similar container orchestration platforms
• Solid understanding of security best practices, database architecture, and cross-platform system design with the ability to identify integration risks and mitigation strategies

Experience we consider a plus:

• Experience with Go (Golang), Python, or similar languages
• Exposure to AI/LLM-assisted development tools (e.g., GitHub Copilot) to improve engineering productivity and quality
