About Northern Trust:

Northern Trust, a Fortune 500 company, is a globally recognized, award-winning financial institution that has been in continuous operation since 1889.

Northern Trust is proud to provide innovative financial services and guidance to the world’s most successful individuals, families, and institutions by remaining true to our enduring principles of service, expertise, and integrity. With more than 130 years of financial experience and over 22,000 partners, we serve the world’s most sophisticated clients using leading technology and exceptional service.

At Northern Trust, the Sr. Portfolio Advisor manages investment activities for a full set of major fee-revenue-producing accounts, representing large and sensitive high-net-worth personal trusts and individual investment portfolios that are typically greater in size and complexity within the market. This role is responsible for developing and executing investment strategies aligned with client objectives, maintaining close collaboration with client service teams and internal partners, and exercising sound judgment to deliver consistent, long-term investment outcomes.

What You’ll Do

  • Manage investment activities for a full set of major fee-revenue-producing accounts, including large and sensitive high-net-worth personal trusts and complex individual investment portfolios.
  • Develop, recommend, and direct the execution of investment programs designed to achieve specific client investment objectives.
  • Analyze and plan overall investment strategy with continuous revision as goals and objectives evolve, working closely and proactively with the broader client service team to identify and execute on areas of opportunity.
  • Maintain an integral and influential presence within the local client-facing team, clients, co-trustees, consultants, the bank’s legal partners, and outside attorneys to ensure effective communication of client requirements and coordination of portfolio activity.
  • Demonstrate mastery of new investment strategies, tools, and capabilities, as well as portfolio research and investment methodologies, through regular engagement with National Investment and Goals-Driven Wealth Management practices, peers, and broader Wealth and Asset Management teams.
  • Participate in thought leadership through publications, educational opportunities, and practice-hosted symposiums and events.
  • Maintain accountability for personal adherence to best practices as measured by the PM Dashboard and related reporting.
  • Execute initiatives, new capability rollouts, and required training in alignment with national expectations.
  • Provide continuous feedback to leadership on areas for improvement related to national initiatives, changes, and expectations.
  • Adhere to National Investment Guidelines, feedback from the REV peer review process, and sound risk management practices.
  • Serve on standing investment services committees and participate in special projects as appropriate.
  • Lead others to solve complex problems, applying sophisticated analytical thought to exercise judgment and identify innovative solutions.
  • Impact the achievement of customer, operational, project, or service objectives.

What Will Make You Successful in the Role

  • Strong knowledge of investment and portfolio management theory, accounting and financial principles, associated investment strategies and instruments, and characteristics of various marketplaces, typically acquired through formal education and professional experience.
  • Demonstrated decision-making, sales, and negotiation skills to support market revenue generation and guide sensitive or complex situations through to agreement.
  • Ability to interpret internal and external business challenges and recommend best practices to improve products, processes, or services.
  • Ability to communicate difficult concepts and influence others to adopt alternative points of view.
  • Requires specialized depth and/or breadth of expertise within the investment and portfolio management discipline.

Experience & Education

  • Minimum of 8–12 years of investment experience, which may include research, with demonstrated long-term investment performance meeting stated objectives.
  • May lead functional teams or projects with moderate resource requirements, risk, and/or complexity.
