About Apron

Apron is building something game-changing.

Founded in 2021, Apron set out to help SMBs win. Small businesses are the backbone of the economy, yet the systems they rely on (particularly around payments) are slow, manual and not built for them. The biggest threat to small business is cash flow, often stemming from a gap between the demand payments put on owners and the aptitude to make the payments effectively.

Apron changes that. We are closing the gap by digitising and simplifying the payments process: capturing invoices, issuing expense cards, paying and getting paid, all in one place.

We have grown fast over the past few years, expanding our team to circa 100 individuals across the UK, Germany, Spain and more. We are backed by Index Ventures, Bessemer Venture Partners, Zinal Grow and Tony Fadell and we’ve raised $50m.

The ambition from here is not incremental growth. Apron is building a category-defining, global fintech business with a clear path to significant revenue scale and international expansion. The next phase requires not just great products and ambition, but a world-class Engineering team.

About our engineering culture

Engineers at Apron are at the heart of what we do. Here's what that means:

  • We build with the customer in mind. We use top-tier technology to build a product that genuinely makes their lives easier.

  • We own our work. We plan the approach, break it down, and bring it to life!

  • We embrace the complexity of finance. Working with money means navigating intricate business logic and thinking through every possible corner case. It’s a rewarding challenge where precision and attention to detail are crucial for building a trustworthy product.

  • We write code we're proud of. We work fast, but we build for the long term. Our code needs to be speedy, secure, and ready to grow with us.

  • We integrate AI tools. We use what's best out there to build a product that genuinely makes lives easier.

What you’ll own

We're hiring more than one engineer for different teams as we're scaling to new products and features. This means:

  • You'll work cross-functionally with Frontend Engineers, Product Managers and Product Designers to develop new products and features for some of our product verticals Capture, Bill Pay, Apron Card and GetPaid and some horizontals like FinCrime.

  • You’ll design systems and develop core financial integrations to guarantee customer funds are secure and transactions are routed with market-leading speed.

  • You’ll share your experience with others, driving innovation, proactively suggesting improvements.

What you’ll need

  • 6-15 years of continuous experience as a backend engineer or Backend-leaning fullstack

  • Experience working in a product-led + fast-paced environment (startup or tech company).

  • Experience with relational databases.

  • Working knowledge of cloud platforms, with preference for Google Cloud Platform.

  • Keen attention to code quality, passion for efficient architecture, and commitment to optimising performance.

  • We use Kotlin for server-side development. While Kotlin proficiency is not mandatory, readiness to work with it is essential.

Would be a highlight if you:

  • Are proficient in Kotlin, for server-side development.

  • Have hands-on experience with Kubernetes and Terraform.

  • Have experience with advanced Postgres features like GIST indexes, partitioning and replication.
