Job Title: Deputy Construction Manager
Location : UK, Nationwide - regular travel to sites required.
The Deputy Construction Manager will support the UK Construction Manager in the delivery, oversight, and continuous improvement of all construction activities across UK projects. The role will provide leadership across multiple sites, ensuring construction works are delivered safely, to the required quality standards, on programme, and in line with project and company objectives. The role has direct responsibility for site-based construction teams and plays a key role in audits, constructability reviews, and cross-functional collaboration with Health & Safety, Quality, and Project teams.
Key Areas of Responsibility (KARs):
Construction Management & Delivery
Assist the UK Construction Manager in managing construction activities across all UK projects.
Provide leadership and direction to Site Managers, Supervisors, and Civil Engineers on all assigned sites.
Ensure construction works are planned, coordinated, and executed in accordance with approved designs, programmes, and specifications.
Act as a senior point of contact for site teams, resolving construction issues an escalating risks where appropriate.
Audits, Quality & Compliance
• Undertake regular construction audits focusing on quality, management systems, and compliance with company procedures.
• Support the Quality team in implementing quality management systems and ensuring adherence to inspection and test plans (ITPs).
Identify non-conformances, drive corrective actions, and promote continuous improvement across sites.
Constructability & Design Reviews
Carry out constructability reviews of designs and project plans to identify risks, inefficiencies, and opportunities for improvement.
Provide practical construction input into project and design development stages.
Support project teams by ensuring designs are buildable, cost-effective, and aligned with site constraints.
Health, Safety & Environmental Support
Actively support the Health & Safety team in promoting a strong safety culture across all sites.
Assist with site safety inspections, reviews, and investigations where required.
Ensure site management teams understand and comply with health, safety, and environmental requirements.
Reporting & Communication
Produce weekly upwards reports for each project visited or under direct control, covering progress, quality, safety, programme, risks, and issues.
Provide clear, timely feedback to the UK Construction Manager on site performance and emerging risks.
Maintain effective communication between site teams, project teams, H&S, and Quality functions.
Team Leadership & Development
• Line-manage and support Site Managers, Supervisors, and Civil Engineers.
• Promote high standards of professionalism, accountability, and teamwork across site-based teams.
• Support training, mentoring, and development of construction personnel.
Experience Required:
Working within National Grid/Substation environment.
Proven experience in a senior construction management role within the UK construction industry.
Strong knowledge of construction methods, sequencing, and site management practices.
Experience managing and auditing construction quality and site management systems.
Good understanding of UK Health & Safety legislation and construction standards.
Experience coordinating multiple projects or sites simultaneously.
Strong leadership, communication, and reporting skills.
Ability to travel regularly to multiple UK sites.
Education Required:
SMSTS
SR163 or previously held SR163 or TP
TWC or TWS
Environmental training
National Grid Competent person
