Position Overview

The primary responsibility of the Adjunct Faculty member is teaching.  We are seeking adjunct instructors to teach the following course at Keck Graduate Institute (KGI):

SCI 6500 Virology (Fall semester, 1.5 credits)

Course Description:

This course introduces the basic principles of virology. The focus will be on viruses that have been involved with epidemics, pandemics, and outbreaks, along with the strategies that they use to infect and propagate. The molecular biology of viruses and how viruses can accomplish so much with so little genetic information will be described. In addition, because viruses have had such an impact on our global societies, there will be an overview of the medical aspects of the diseases and the development of vaccines to immunize against the infections. The course will also introduce how viruses are used for targeted therapeutics (gene therapy).

The successful candidate must share in the mission of KGI and the Henry E. Riggs School of Applied Life Sciences Programs. The Adjunct Faculty member reports directly to the Dean of the Henry E. Riggs School of Applied Life Sciences and works collaboratively with the Program Directors and other faculty.

Located in beautiful Claremont, California, Keck Graduate Institute is a member of the prestigious Claremont Colleges, a consortium of five undergraduate liberal arts colleges, two graduate institutions, and The Claremont Colleges Services, which provide shared institutional support services.

Education and Experience:

Minimum of a Master’s degree in a related field, a doctoral degree is strongly preferred. A minimum of 2 years of teaching experience, prior experience in teaching for active learning preferred. Experience with the Canvas learning management system is a plus.

  • Provides high-quality student instruction.

Hours, Classification, and Status: 

This is a part-time, exempt, adjunct faculty position and is not eligible for benefits.

Schedules will vary depending on course assignments and the needs of the department or the Institute.

The base salary range for this position is $2,500 - $15,000 per semester, depending on credits per course.

Physical and Mental Requirements

Ability to maintain good concentration level while dealing with interruptions; attention to details with emphasis on accuracy; capable of giving, receiving, and analyzing information, formulating work plans, and articulating goals and action plans.  Sitting in a normal seated position for extended periods of time.  Standing for extended periods of time. Reaching and extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction.  Finger dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than the whole hand(s), or arm(s), for example, using a keyboard.  Communication skills using the spoken word. Ability to see within normal parameters.  Ability to hear within normal parameters.  Ability to bend and stoop, for example, to file.  Ability to move about.  Ability to lift and carry short distances up to 20 lbs., for example to lift or move office supplies, files, books and packages. 

Ability to travel locally as needed to meet business requirements, which may include driving or other modes of transportation. Occasionally, will be required to stand for prolonged periods of time at activities/events on and off-campus.
