Your Opportunity:
Capital Power is seeking an Environmental Accountant to support the accounting, settlement, and financial reporting of environmental commodities and obligations. This role plays a critical part in ensuring accurate financial results, strong balance sheet integrity, and compliant accounting under IFRS, while partnering closely with Trading, Commercial Finance, and Reporting teams. The successful candidate will act as a subject‑matter expert in Environmental Accounting, with a strong focus on process excellence, documentation, and continuous improvement.
You Will Contribute to Our Team By:
Recording, reviewing, and validating environmental accruals, including unearned revenue, accrued liabilities, and accrued receivables.
Proactively investigating and validating transactions in the ETRM system (Allegro), supplementing Front Office information.
Completing all Environmental monthly close activities, including monthly margin balance reconciliations and inventory reconciliations
Developing and maintaining inventory continuity schedules for environmental intangibles and held‑for‑trading instruments.
Identifying opportunities to automate and enhance reconciliation processes to improve efficiency and accuracy and drive continuous improvement across Environmental Accounting processes and controls.
Reviewing and validating monthly Environmental EBITDA to ensure results are complete and accurate.
Documenting accounting policies for new environmental commodity products in accordance with IFRS
Partnering with Commercial Finance to ensure intercompany Environmental entries are recorded accurately for both internal management reporting and external reporting.
Acting as a trusted advisor and go‑to resource for Environmental Accounting inquiries.
What You Will Bring to the Role:
Education and Experience
CPA designation (or actively pursuing) preferred
2-5 years of accounting experience, preferably within energy, commodity trading, or environmental markets
Strong knowledge of IFRS, with working knowledge of US GAAP differences
Experience with ETRM systems considered an asset
Advanced Excel skills; experience with automation and process improvement considered an asset
Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills
Working Conditions:
Hybrid office position in Calgary office with 3 days in office and 2 days remote.
