Job Order Hourly Rate of Pay: $15.00 (Based on education and/or years of relevant work experience reflected on the application)

Positions will be assigned to the Department of Public Safety - National Guard.- Tarheel ChalleNGe Academy (TCA).

Employee works collaboratively to assure a safe environment for 16-18 year olds who are attending the Tarheel ChalleNGe Academy Program.  Position functions as a mentor, advisor, counselor and teacher while communicating the program standards and expectations to the cadets.  Employee identifies factors that could lead to inappropriate behavior and make immediate corrections.  Position has the most interaction with the cadets and serves as the front line supervisor responsible for all aspects of academy life.  Responsible for documenting occurrences during shift and briefing follow on shifts concerning any problems or issues.  Position initiates counseling statement/incident reports as needed to document inappropriate behavior.

Effective July 1, 2025, candidates now meet the minimum qualifications of a position if they have the minimum education and experience listed from the class specification.  The Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities listed within this vacancy announcement will be used only as management preferences and will be used to screen for the most qualified pool of applicants.

Management prefers applicants with the following: 

  • Experience with teaching, coaching and mentoring 16–18-year-old at-risk youth

  • Experience observing, assessing and collecting data associated with at-risk youth behavior (failing to follow instructions, altercations with other cadets, disrespecting adult leaders and/or peers) Experience in organizing and/or leading groups for training or service projects

Minimum Education and Experience

Associate’s degree in human services or related degree from an appropriately accredited institution; or High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two years of directly related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Necessary Special Qualifications As required by facility, CPR certification and listing as a Nurse Aide I or Nurse Aide II by the NC Division of Health Service Regulation required prior to providing direct patient care.
