Job Overview
The Staff Scientist I performs a variety of complex and independent activities involved in planning, organizing and conducting research and implementing studies within the overall scope of research project (s), including advanced input to the design of research methodologies, execution of experiments, facilitation of training, data collection and analysis across projects.
The Staff Scientist I provides advanced operational and analytical support to the planning, development, and implementation of sponsored research projects. With the capacity for independent work, they lead research projects that have various research methodologies linked to systems; manage junior staff; and handle formal report preparation both for conference abstracts and peer review publications.
In all duties and interactions, the Staff Scientist I demonstrates a capacity for independent work, including conducting experiments and performing data analysis of systems, experiments in multiple experimental model species such as animal models; adapting, developing and applying research methodologies; developing and managing research projects with limited supervision; drafting and writing project reports and peer review manuscripts; and managing a team of junior research staff
Work Interactions
Reporting directly to the Principal Investigator, while working collaboratively with other research staff, the Staff Scientist I provides leadership and at times direction for junior research staff. As well, the Staff Scientist I collaborates among multi-disciplinary team members based in multiple partner international institutions, and uphold Georgetown missions through these interactions.
Requirements and Qualifications
Master’s degree and 2-5 years of experience or equivalent combination of work experience and education.
At least 2-5 years of laboratory work experience.
Demonstrate ability to perform independently and communicate scientific results and participate in a highly collaborative environment.
Must possess a strong work ethic and be self-motivated to learn and become familiar with primary scientific literature.
Knowledge of research principles, concepts, practices, and methods.
Knowledge of scientific laboratory research techniques.
Computer literacy and strong mathematical, analytical, and research skills.
Excellent communication, time management, attention to detail, and organization skills are essential.
Flexibility and capacity for rapid response to rapidly evolving needs for the planning, development, and implementation of research projects as a valued member of a multi-disciplinary team.
Preferred Qualifications
PhD, MD, MD/PhD or equivalent in relevant field.
At least 2-5 years of hands on experience in a relevant field
Ability to undertake, and to work independently on, complex research projects (proficiency in developing, executing, and implementing research protocols)
Experience in project management
Experience in data collection and analysis related to laboratory systems
Strong information technology/computer skills

Pay Range:
The projected salary or hourly pay range for this position which represents the full range of anticipated compensation is:
$44,022.00 - $73,406.80Compensation is determined by a number of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate’s individual qualifications, experience, education, skills, and certifications, as well as the University’s business needs and external factors.
