Job Summary:

To provide social services and assistance to improve the social and psychological functioning of children and their families; to maximize the well-being of families and the academic functioning of children by providing support, guidance and outside resources when necessary.

Essential Functions:

  • Works in collaboration with counseling staff, teachers, parents and administrators to determine what services are required to meet the needs of the children and their families
  • Networks with local agencies as means of providing services to support families
  • Provides, finds and arranges, support services for families in need
  • Works closely with the school nurse as a means of identifying serious medical issues which must be rectified in order for student to be productive in school
  • Consults with parents, teachers and counseling staff to determine causes of truancy and to implement solution
  • Develops and reviews service plans in consultation with children and their families
  • Performs follow-up assessments on quantity and quality of services provided
  • Collects supplementary information to better assist students and their families
  • Serves as a liaison between students, homes, schools and community agencies
  • Demonstrates knowledge of school counseling laws and practices and Special Education laws and regulations
  • Reports problems of neglect or abuse to local Children and Youth Services (CYS) agency
  • Complies with policies, regulations and procedures of the Chester Community Charter School; communicates effectively with parents and work collaboratively with staff
  • Displays a high-level of professional conduct and image at all times; establishes and maintains an acceptable attendance record; and participates in extra-curricular activities and/or leadership roles outside the classroom
  • Acts as Local Homeless Student Liaison under the McKinney Vento Act. Essential Functions as Homeless Student Liaison include, but are not limited to:
    • Initiating efforts to make organizational accommodations for homeless students;
    • Using Title I funds for the purpose of educational related services
    • Familiarity with the School’s policies and procedures, providing enrollment and access to educational services, providing outreach, assisting accompanied youth, and suggesting activities to spread awareness of the educational needs of students, legal responsibilities of the school, and local policies and procedures
  • Performs other related duties as assigned

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work from an accredited college or university; Master’s degree preferred
  • Pennsylvania Criminal Record Check Clearance
  • Pennsylvania Child Abuse Clearance
  • FBI Criminal Background Clearance

Certificates/Licenses:

  • Pennsylvania License in Social Work


Demonstrated Knowledge of:

  • Mental health issues and proper procedures for identification and referrals
  • Conducting counseling sessions
  • Conducting interviews and engaging families and students
  • Interpreting data relative to a student’s social history by conducting behavioral observations, making home visits, conducting interviews, and reviewing school records

Demonstrated Ability to:

  • Collect, interpret, and synthesize information about a student’s social history, community environment, family dynamics, economic differences, and significant crises that influence academic and behavioral functioning
  • Work cooperatively as an interdisciplinary team member and devise an appropriate service plan for referred students and their families
  • Synthesize and interpret diagnostic and assessment data
  • Communicate and manage time effectively
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with community agencies, students, families, team members, and others
