Job Description:

I. Position Summary

The inpatient pharmacy technician supports pharmacists in the safe and efficient delivery of pharmacy services. Responsibilities include medication preparation and distribution, inventory management, regulatory compliance, customer service, and maintenance of pharmacy records.

II. Work Schedule (Per Diem)

  • The pharmacy schedule is created six weeks in advance. A few weeks before the upcoming schedule is posted, per diem staff are asked to submit at least six shifts of availability (not a commitment to work all six) to support scheduling flexibility. Once the schedule is posted, you will know which shifts you were assigned.

  • Flexibility to work variable shifts, including weekends, evenings, and holidays, based on departmental needs.

III. Key Responsibilities

Medication Preparation

  • Prepares medications accurately and in a timely manner, including selection, labeling, repackaging, non-sterile compounding, and sterile compounding (as applicable).

  • Maintains cleanliness and organization of pharmacy work areas.

Medication Distribution

  • Delivers medications accurately and promptly to appropriate storage and patient care areas.

  • Ensures proper handling and storage of medications during distribution.

Regulatory Compliance

  • Adheres to all policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.

  • Maintains required documentation (e.g., temperature logs, controlled substance records, training documentation).

  • Participates in routine inspections of medication storage areas and reports discrepancies.

Communication & Teamwork

  • Communicates effectively and professionally with pharmacy staff and interdisciplinary teams.

  • Demonstrates accountability, teamwork, and professionalism in all interactions.

  • Participates in team meetings and supports onboarding/training of staff and students as needed.

Customer Service

  • Responds to and triages phone calls from hospital staff and vendors.

  • Provides timely and professional service to internal and external customers.

Technology & Systems

  • Utilizes pharmacy information systems, automation, and related technologies to support workflow and accuracy.

Other Duties

  • Performs additional duties as assigned by the supervising pharmacist.

  • Complies with all hospital and departmental policies.

IV. Physical Requirements

The physical demands described here are representative of those required to successfully perform the essential functions of this position.

  • Prolonged standing and walking throughout the shift.

  • Frequent use of hands for fine motor tasks, including medication preparation, labeling, and compounding.

  • Ability to lift and transport medication bins, supplies, and equipment (typically up to 20 pounds).

  • Ability to push/pull medication carts and automated dispensing restock bins.

  • Frequent reaching, bending, and stooping to access or unload medications and supplies.

  • Visual acuity sufficient to read medication labels, computer screens, and written documentation.

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with frequent interruptions and competing priorities.

  • May be required to work in sterile environments (e.g., IV cleanroom) and comply with gowning and aseptic technique requirements, including no cosmetics or artifical nails and/or nail polish.

V. Qualifications

  • Current registration as a Pharmacy Technician with the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Pharmacy (required), Certified Technicians (preferred).
