Job Description:

RN - Nursing Professional Development (NPD) 1 works collaboratively with leadership and the Professional Development Department to improve the quality of patient care and nursing practice, with associated patient and departmental outcomes. The NPD 1 accomplishes this through facilitation of clinical education, professional development, competency initiatives and direct clinical support activities. The NPD 1 is responsive to evolving educational needs within a specified department, and serves as a clinical expert, learning facilitator, consultant, change agent, leader and interprofessional collaborator in a specific area of responsibility. Collaborates to identify, develop and deliver educational programs for both individuals and groups in both clinical, classroom, and virtual settings. Fosters empowerment of staff by providing clinical instruction, and support to assure clinical competency of staff and safe, effective delivery of patient care. Incorporates evidence and appropriate skill set standards. The NPD 1 actively participates in quality improvement (QI) and EBP processes. The position supports core behaviors, standards, values, and missions of UofL Health, accrediting bodies, and the profession of Nursing as a professional role model.
Essential Functions:

Clinical Expert
o    Serves as a role model to nursing staff in the delivery of excellent patient care for designated patient populations
o    Collaborates with nursing and interdisciplinary colleagues to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate strategies to address complex patient care issues
o    Assists staff with clinical decision making and priority setting
o    Collaborates with leadership to develop, evaluate, and implement standards of patient care / care planning and professional practice with attention to quality, service, cost effectiveness, comfort, safety, age specific implications, and cultural competence
o    Serves as a patient / family advocate, incorporating respect for and acknowledgement of cultural diversity and individual patient needs
o    Maintains and integrates current evidenced-based knowledge into educational programming
o    Promotes an environment consistent with the core concepts of Patient Centered Care, and demonstration of the core values

Learning Facilitator
o    Facilitates the ongoing education, competency and professional development of the nursing staff and students to meet competency requirements in accordance with departmental objectives and appropriate accreditation standards
o    Coordinates orientation of newly hired employees to specified department
o    Plans, prepares, and maintains materials for use in competency based educational programs, utilizing current standards, regulations, and evidenced based resources
o    Collaborates in the development or modification of patient education materials, as appropriate
o    Collaborates with stakeholders to assess learning needs for clinical staff, designs and implements programs and competency strategies to address identified learning needs
o    Incorporates principles of adult learning and evidence-based education in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of education and competency programs
o    Assists others in developing clinical reasoning skills
o    Participates in learning technologies via simulation, LMS, virtual classroom, and multimedia
o    Communicates effectively in visual, oral, and written form and demonstrates effective presentation skills
o    Facilitates initial provider and renewal courses for BLS, ACLS, PALS and/or NRP as appropriate for area
o    Challenges existing practice when not aligned with current best practices    40

Additional Job Description:

Education:
•    Bachelor of Science in Nursing from an accredited program (required)
Experience: 
•    Minimum of 2 years as a Registered Nurse in area of clinical specialty (required)- Emergency Department
•    Previous experience in education, teaching or professional development (preferred)
Licensure:
•    Active unrestricted Registered Nurse license in Kentucky (required)
Certification:
•    Professional nursing certification (ANCC Recognized) in clinical specialty (required, or must obtain within 6 months of hire)
•    American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) Provider, other resuscitation certifications (Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Pediatric Advanced Life Support, Neonatal Resuscitation Program) based on area of clinical specialty (required)
•    Professional nursing certification in professional development or education (preferred)
•    AHA BLS, ACLS, PALS and/or NRP Instructor (preferred) 
Job Competency:
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities critical to this role: 
•    Experience in coordinating and planning care for complex patients. High level knowledge and application of pharmacology and pathophysiology. 
•    Strong abilities in learning design and implementation.  Able to work collaboratively to achieve desired department and facility results
•    Demonstrated ability for project management, program evaluation and competency assessment
•    Evidence-based practice and educational modalities, including evaluation of learning and associated patient / organizational outcomes

Language Ability: 
•    Must be able to communicate effectively in both verbal and written formats.

Reasoning Ability:  
•    Able to critically think through complex patient situations, process improvements, evidence-based practice. 
•    Able to assist others in developing clinical reasoning skills.
Computer Skills: 
•    Proficient with computerized documentation, Microsoft Office applications, data extraction and analysis
•    Proficient with utilization of learning technologies
