The Lead Engineer, Stress & Life Analysis provides technical leadership and guidance to the team to meet business and program objectives. In this role, you will lead the execution of stress and life analyses for assigned components and systems, make technical decisions within established frameworks, and solve problems through a combination of engineering judgment, cross-functional collaboration, and medium-term planning. - Lead the analysis, assessment, and evaluation of assigned projects using sound engineering principles and in compliance with business standards, practices, procedures, and product/program requirements
- Apply mechanical engineering principles, material behavior knowledge, and understanding of gas turbine operating environments to support component design, validation, and in-service assessments
- Perform and guide stress and life analyses of static structures and rotating engine components, including nonlinear assessments involving frictional contacts, preloads, thermal gradients, and pressure loads
- Provide technical direction and mentoring to less experienced engineers in stress and lifing methods, tools, and best practices
- Prepare, review, and present technical data and substantiation to internal and external customers
- Document, communicate, and ensure the technical quality of analysis results and recommendations
- Drive robust documentation of technical data generated for assigned projects and tasks, consistent with engineering policies and procedures
- Collaborate with design, materials, manufacturing, systems, and program teams to resolve technical issues and support product and program execution
- Participate in and lead teams addressing specific organizational, technical, and process improvement initiatives
- Promote knowledge sharing, technical rigor, and open dialogue across the engineering organization
- Support root cause investigations, field/problem resolution, and design improvements related to structural integrity and component life
- As necessary, make decisions affecting airworthiness and environmental protection as permitted by delegation in the Design Organization Handbook
Requirements
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline
- Significant experience in stress and life analysis
- Proficiency in English
- Demonstrated experience in structural analysis of gas turbine components and hardware
- Experience with finite element analysis and interpretation of analytical results
- Strong oral and written communication skills
- Demonstrated ability to work across functions and provide technical leadership
Desired Characteristics
- Strong technical depth in stress analysis and lifing methodologies
- Experience with nonlinear static stress analysis of static structures and rotating engine components
- Familiarity with nonlinear friction contacts, bolt preloads, non-uniform thermal gradients, and pressure loading
- Knowledge of fatigue, low-cycle fatigue, high-cycle fatigue, and fracture mechanics principles
- Experience with FEA tools, including ANSYS / APDL, Workbench, and related meshing tools
- Working knowledge of APDL macros and model automation
- Experience with convergence troubleshooting and validation of complex finite element models
- Familiarity with CAD software such as NX
- Demonstrated mentoring, coaching, and technical review capability
- Strong problem-solving mindset with a focus on quality, execution, and continuous improvement
