Inside the Role
Inside the Role:This is a position within the MD and HD Thermodynamic NA (Performance and Engine simulation) team and will be located in Detroit, Michigan. The responsibilities of this team are to calibrate fuel maps and develop state-of-the-art Heavy-Duty Diesel Engines to fulfill current and future emissions, greenhouse gas and OBD requirements (EPA27, CARB27, GHG Phase 2, EURO VI). These responsibilities include meeting regulatory requirements contained within emissions legislation and customer power demand, while balancing a broad spectrum of boundary conditions in varying environments and vehicle duty cycles. The person in this role will be responsible for developing a subset of the future Heavy Duty Diesel engine calibration and supporting current Heavy and medium Duty Diesel Engine products with Customer Service investigations closing on customer field issues, Furthermore the person will cooperate closely with other teams like OBD, compliance, FIS and German development team to improve our future engine products.

What You Drive at DTNA
Understand and interpret performance, emissions and OBD regulations in context of how the requirements will be fulfilled by Detroit engines and aftertreatments sold in the U.S. and in other countries
Define and release new or improved products and follow the release through scheduling, procurement, manufacture, assembly and test.
Effectively collaborate within a cross-functional team to ensure the various requirements and boundary conditions are fully understood and maintained
Regularly prioritize workload, clearly communicate progress and elevate roadblocks to the team and management
Assess Heavy Duty Diesel engine performance and emissions margin by reviewing data gathered in performance test cells, durability, engineering vehicles, summer /winter testing and the reliability growth fleet,
Interact closely with Customer Service team to assess, analyze and steer solutions with HD and MD field engines
Develop large portions (i.e. altitude, sealevel maps) of heavy-duty engine fuel maps and be responsible for their release.
Develop parts of the fuel maps (i.e. thermo-management or cold maps) for future Heavy Duty Diesel (like HDES25++ or HDES30+) Engines according to DVP&R plan.
Improve DVP&R and other analysis tools for engine development
Assess aftertreatment performance and emissions margin by reviewing data gathered in performance test cells, durability, engineering vehicles and the reliability growth fleet
Run back-to-back evaluations for engines and parts as defined by the projects or ICMs.
Establish test procedures (including instrumentation, fixturing, test environment) to fulfill DVPR requirements.
Utilize structured problem-solving methods to identify root cause and integrate corrective actions into new or existing aftertreatment software.
Analyze data, draw conclusions, and provide recommendations of technical results to the management team.
Leverage strong relationships with Global counterparts to efficiently test and release aftertreatment software.
Independently schedule work including issuing work orders, monitoring progress, and resolving problems in order to ensure timely completion of projects.
Generate ideas to reduce product costs and improve quality.
Create project plans and timelines and assist management with defining budget requirements.
Promptly resolve plant issues and field problems.
Lead cross-functional activities with regional and Global counterparts in Engineering, Quality, Manufacturing, Sales, Purchasing, and Suppliers.
Communicate effectively and maintain professional/social interaction in a multi-cultural and international environment.
Improve knowledge and skills through training; actively identify areas of potential self-improvement and alert management of opportunities for training.
Lead initiatives to improve product quality, process efficiency, and employee satisfaction.
Maintain daily record of work hours by project.
Other activities as necessary and/or assigned.
Knowledge You Should Bring
Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechatronic Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology (ABET Accredited University).
3-5 years of relevant industry experience
Minimum 2 years’ experience working with Heavy Duty Diesel Engines, Thermodynamics and internal combustion engines operation or similar experience i.e. turbocharger development
Demonstrated experience identifying and solving the root cause of complex problems
2+ years of experience applying relevant Engineering concepts and tools
Demonstrated ability to work in a team as well as being able to execute independently
Demonstrable knowledge with engine controls or controls theory
Knowledge of Detroit Diesel products and development tools
Experience identifying and solving the root cause of complex problems.
Strong interpersonal skills and able to work with and get work done effectively through others.
Knowledge of eDVPR tool and DVPR development
Knowledge of problem-solving tools like Shainin or 8D.
Ability to work in a truly global environment with different cultures to collaborate successfully.
Ability to manage multiple projects and inform management of any barriers.
Excellent communication, organizational, analytical, and interpersonal skills.
Strong PC skills including MS Office, MATLAB/SIMULINK and database tools.
Ability to travel domestically and internationally up to 15%.

Exceptional Candidates Might Have
Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electrical Computer Engineering, Mechatronic Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology (ABET Accredited University).
Ability and knowledge to develop next generation of improved turbochargers
3+ years of Powertrain development experience.
Proficiency in German Language is a plus
