About the role

SEL Government Services Department (GSD) is seeking an Embedded Systems Engineer to help develop microprocessor-based protective relays to meet the communication, metering, and power system protection needs of the U.S. government in Pullman, Washington.

As an Embedded Systems Engineer, you will design and develop firmware and RTL for devices that make electric power safter, more reliable, and more economical. You will work with hardware engineers, automation engineers, and power engineers to spec, design, code, and test logic that runs on SoCs.

SEL is an innovation leader in the power systems industry. You will have opportunities to invent and improve standards and own patents related to the power system community.

US CITIZENSHIP REQUIRED

A typical day might include:

* Designing data acquisition, digital signal processing, and communication protocol sub-systems

* Modeling unit-level and system-level designs using software languages like Python and MATLAB

* Writing API interface specifications, C/C++/VHDL/Verilog code, unit tests, simulations, and performing in-hardware debugging

* Reviewing others' work

Minimum qualifications:
* B.S. in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or related discipline, or equivalent combination of education and experience

* Proven experience writing complex system software and embedded firmware
* Experience developing programmable logic for Xilinx/Altera/Microsemi tools, simulation, timing analysis, and synthesis
* Passion for electronic design, testing, and product development

* Ability to learn from and mentor others
 

Preferred experience with:

* ARM CPU architecture
* AMD Xlinx SoCs (Vitis/Vivado)

* Modelsim and/or QuestaSim simulation tools

* Python and Tcl scripting languages
* Ethernet switch filtering and routing design
* 3-phase and electric power systems* Supervisory experience
* Product development and project management

Pay range data:

We anticipate filling this position as an Engineer I or Engineer II: $97,700 — $115,300.

We are open to reviewing additional candidates with more or less experience and the salary range may differ if filled at a different level. Our ranges are determined by job, responsibility, and location. We base our starting pay offer and title on location and job-related factors such as candidate experience, training, knowledge, and skills.
