Position Summary
We are seeking an Engineer III – Opto-Mechanical to join a growing R&D team in Hyderabad supporting sustaining engineering, VAVE, and lifecycle management for the KingFisher sample preparation systems and Detection instruments.
In this role, you will be a key individual contributor, owning opto-mechanical subsystems and supporting the design, integration, and performance of optical and mechanical components within instrument platforms. You will work closely with cross-functional teams to resolve technical issues, improve system performance, and contribute to cost optimization and lifecycle management efforts.
Key Responsibilities
Opto-Mechanical Design & Development
Design, develop, and support opto-mechanical assemblies, including optical mounts, alignment features, housings, and precision mechanical components.
Own subsystems or modules, including CAD modeling, detailing, and documentation.
Support optical alignment, tolerance analysis, and performance optimization of integrated systems.
Collaborate on selection and integration of optical components (e.g., lenses, filters, detectors, light sources).
Sustaining Engineering & Lifecycle Support
Execute sustaining activities including design updates, ECO implementation, and component obsolescence management.
Perform root cause analysis of optical and mechanical performance issues and implement corrective actions.
Support testing, validation, and calibration of opto-mechanical systems.
Value Analysis / Value Engineering (VAVE)
Identify and implement cost reduction opportunities within opto-mechanical designs and components.
Evaluate alternative materials, components, and suppliers in collaboration with senior engineers.
Support design for manufacturability and scalability of opto-mechanical assemblies.
System Integration & Technical Contribution
Collaborate with systems, electrical, firmware, and assay teams to support system integration and troubleshooting.
Contribute to system requirements, interface definitions, and verification activities.
Participate in design reviews and technical discussions, providing data-driven input.
Global & Cross-Functional Collaboration
Work with global R&D teams (Finland, US, Singapore) to support knowledge transfer and ongoing product support.
Partner with manufacturing, quality, service, and sourcing to resolve issues and improve product performance.
Collaborate with Business Unit Product Management to support execution aligned with product priorities.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Optical Engineering, or related field.
5+ years of experience in opto-mechanical or precision mechanical engineering.
Experience with CAD tools and mechanical design principles.
Familiarity with optical systems, alignment techniques, and tolerance analysis.
Strong skills in troubleshooting, root cause analysis, and hands-on problem solving.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with life sciences or analytical instrumentation (e.g., optical detection systems, qPCR).
Experience with optical components and systems (lenses, filters, detectors, illumination).
Experience with DFM/DFA, cost optimization, and VAVE initiatives.
Familiarity with optical simulation or analysis tools.
Exposure to regulated product development environments.
Impact

Drives execution of design updates, issue resolution, and validation activities.
Contributes to optical performance, system reliability, and cost improvements.
Supports the development of R&D capability in Hyderabad.
