Software Engineer – Services

About the Team

eBay’s Search Experiences team builds and operates the critical backend systems that power the search experience for millions of users worldwide. We develop high-performance, low-latency services that ensure buyers can discover the right items quickly and reliably. Our team values collaboration, curiosity, technical craftsmanship, and continuous learning as we evolve eBay’s next-generation agentic and search platform.

About the Role

We are looking for a motivated Software Engineer with strong backend engineering fundamentals and an eagerness to grow in large-scale distributed systems. In this role, you will help build and enhance scalable, resilient services that support eBay’s core search capabilities. You will work closely with experienced engineers across the team, contribute to feature development, improve service quality, and learn how to operate systems at global scale.

This is a great opportunity for an engineer who is excited about building backend systems, solving meaningful technical problems, and growing their skills in search infrastructure.

What You’ll Do

  • Chip in to the design and development of backend services used by eBay’s agentic/search platform.

  • Implement features, enhancements, and fixes with guidance from senior engineers.

  • Write high-quality, maintainable code with appropriate test coverage (unit, integration, functional).

  • Collaborate with product managers and other engineering teams to clarify requirements and deliver high-quality solutions.

  • Assist with service reliability efforts, including debugging issues, improving monitoring, and participating in operational reviews.

  • Participate in code reviews—both giving and receiving constructive feedback.

  • Stay up to date with backend and distributed systems technologies, applying new learnings where appropriate.

What You Bring

You may qualify with a combination of the following skills and experiences:

Core Qualifications

  • Strong foundation in computer science fundamentals (data structures, algorithms, software design).

  • Experience with at least one backend programming language such as Kotlin, Java, Python, or similar.

  • Understanding of GraphQL protocol, REST APIs, microservices, or distributed system concepts.

  • Familiarity with modern development practices—CI/CD, testing, logging, monitoring, version control.

  • Ability to collaborate effectively, ask good questions, and learn quickly.

  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.

Preferred Qualifications (Nice-to-have, not required)

  • Experience building or maintaining backend systems in a production environment.

  • Exposure to search technologies (Elasticsearch, Lucene) or information retrieval concepts.

  • Experience with cloud infrastructure, containers, or orchestration tools.

  • Previous experience related to distributed systems or large-scale services.

Education

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.

Why Join Us

  • Impact at Scale: Build technology that powers one of the world’s largest e-commerce search platforms.

  • Growth & Learning: Work alongside experienced engineers and gain real-world distributed systems and search expertise.

  • Innovative Culture: Join a collaborative, supportive team that encourages experimentation and continuous improvement.

  • Modern Technology: Work with high-scale systems and innovative backend technologies.

  • Inclusive Environment: Thrive in a diverse, people-first culture focused on employee growth and empowerment.
