The NC Department of Adult Correction is one of the largest state agencies with more than 14,000 employees. It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving lives and property through prevention, protection, and preparation as well as the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. Description of Work

The Release Specialist is responsible for managing daily and monthly offender release approvals, ensuring all release dates are processed accurately, efficiently, and in full compliance with NC Department of Adult Correction policies. This role reviews and approves release dates according to court orders, conducts quality assurance checks, and coordinates closely with internal teams to verify documentation, resolve discrepancies, and maintain accurate records. The position also supports operational tasks such as data merging and record expunctions while staying current on policy and regulatory changes affecting release processes.

Job Duties

•Review, verify, and approve offender release dates in accordance with court orders and departmental policies.
•Coordinate priority release approvals with the Auditing Section and resolve discrepancies through communication with prison unit staff.
•Conduct quality assurance checks on detainers, pending charges, sentences, and disposition comments to ensure accurate documentation.
•Maintain accurate records, ensure timely processing, and support compliance with legal standards and internal quality controls.
•Perform operational tasks including data merging and record expunctions related to offender records.

  • Working knowledge of the Offender Population Unified System (OPUS) a minimun of 2 years experience.
  • Ability to enter and retrieve data of confidential records using various forms of database applications.
  • A working knowledge of Microsoft Office and a minimum of 1 year Administrative experience.
  • Knowledge of NCDAC policies, procedures and protocols handling confidential records.

The Combined Records section is responsible for the development and maintenance of offender records and the calculation of sentences for all offenders who are incarcerated in the North Carolina Department of Adult Correction facilities. The staff at Combined Records obtain information from a variety of sources, including the courts, the Post-Release Supervision/Parole Commission, the North Carolina Department of Justice, the Attorney General's Office, and federal, state, and county law enforcement agencies. The section also provides auxiliary services to the Post-Release Supervision/Parole Commission, Community Supervision, and the Extradition Office.
