Role Summary
The Lead, Product Control is responsible for leading the Product Control team, within Capital Power’s Commodity Risk function. The role is accountable for ensuring valuation integrity, P&L governance, and valuation related reporting for Capital Power’s Supply & Trading activities. This role oversees daily and month end P&L production, price curve validation, independent price verification, and valuation model governance, ensuring results are accurate, explainable, and compliant with internal controls and regulatory requirements.
The Lead, Product Control serves as a key control and analytical partner to Trading, Market Risk, Finance, and Compliance, and provides leadership, mentorship, and strategic direction to the Product Control team while driving continuous improvement across valuation processes and valuation ETRM system controls.
As part of a rapidly growing team, the successful candidate will demonstrate broad middle office and commodity risk management experience, as well as the flexibility and a desire to contribute to wider team growth and development.
You will contribute to our team by:
Build, lead and mentor the Product Control team, fostering a strong control environment and culture of analytical rigor.
Own daily and month end P&L production, validation, and signoff, ensuring completeness, accuracy, and timeliness.
Review, approve, and govern all commodity price curves, including daily validation and month end independent price verification (IPV).
Conduct and oversee P&L attribution and explanation, clearly articulating drivers of realized and unrealized P&L and impacts of market activity.
Work with Market Risk team to provide oversight and governance of valuation models, assumptions, and data inputs (system and external), ensuring consistent and defensible valuation outcomes.
Maintain strong valuation controls, including adjustments and data quality checks to support P&L and reporting.
Support Market Risk team with evaluation of structured transactions and complex products from a valuation and economic perspective.
Interpret and support valuation related regulatory requirements (e.g., derivatives reporting), in partnership with Compliance and Risk.
Support internal and external audits by providing documentation, analysis, and evidence related to valuation, P&L, and Product Control processes.
Drive enhancements to valuation workflows, data quality, and system integrity within the ETRM platform.
Support the development and implementation of data-led automation opportunities to increase team impact through effective, efficient & scalable operations.
What you will bring to the role:
Education:
Post‑secondary degree in Finance, Business, Economics, or a related field.
Professional designation an asset (e.g., CFA, FRM, PRM, ERP).
Experience:
8+ years of experience in Product Control, valuation, or P&L reporting within energy, commodities, or financial trading environments.
3+ years of people leadership experience.
Technical Skills
- Deep understanding of valuation methodologies, price curve construction, and P&L attribution.
- Strong working knowledge of ETRM systems and valuation workflows.
- Experience with SOX controls, audit support, and regulatory reporting requirements.
- Proven ability to lead teams, partner cross functionally, and drive continuous improvement.
