Job Title: Data Science Intern - Summer 2026

Job Category: Intern/Co-op

Time Type: Part time

Minimum Clearance Required to Start: TS/SCI

Employee Type: Part-Time On-Call

Percentage of Travel Required: Up to 10%

Type of Travel: Local

Anticipated Posting End: 4/30/2026

The Opportunity:
We are seeking a Data Science Intern to support the Foundation GEOINT division's AI/ML initiatives focused on computer vision and geospatial intelligence. This internship is designed for someone interested in applying deep learning and statistical methods to real-world remote sensing challenges. You'll work with satellite imagery and geospatial data to develop automated feature detection capabilities that support mapping and charting products for government customers. High-performing interns may have the opportunity to transition into a full-time data science role within Foundation GEOINT, with potential opportunities to also support the Mission & Engineering Support (M&ES) AI Expeditionary Team on customer-facing, mission-driven AI delivery.

Responsibilities:

· Work within a small data science team to support an organization that produces mapping and charting products.

· Assist in developing and evaluating deep learning models for computer vision-based feature extraction.

· Work with overhead imagery and geospatial datasets to support automated feature detection pipelines.

· Support annotation, preprocessing, and dataset curation workflows for training computer vision models.

· Help assess model performance across diverse imagery conditions and support iterative improvement.

· Document assumptions, experiment results, and recommendations in a way that makes the work repeatable and transferable.

· Help translate technical findings into practical next steps for productization or mission integration.

Qualifications:

Required:

· Currently pursuing a BS/BA, MS, or PhD in Computer Science, Data Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Engineering, or a related field.

· Coursework or hands-on experience in AI/ML concepts (e.g., classification, clustering, deep learning, model evaluation, statistical inference), with exposure to image data or remote sensing data preferred.

· Working knowledge of Python for data analysis and machine learning.

· Willing to work onsite in Fort Collins and/or Denver, CO with possible hybrid schedule.

· Familiarity with at least one ML/DL library (e.g., PyTorch, TensorFlow, scikit-learn).

· Curiosity, strong problem-solving skills, and good communication and documentation habits.

· Willing and able to obtain a security clearance (TS-SCI) for potential transition to full-time role.

Desired:

· Experience with computer vision tasks such as object detection, semantic segmentation, or image classification.

· Familiarity with computer vision toolsets (e.g., OpenCV, Torchvision, scikit-image, etc.).

· Familiarity with geospatial data formats (GeoTIFF, Shapefile, GeoJSON, etc.) and tools (GDAL, Rasterio, GeoPandas, QGIS, ArcGIS, etc.).

· Experience with annotation/labeling tools (e.g., CVAT, etc.).

· Experience with statistical modeling, experimental design, and model validation techniques.

· Understanding of uncertainty quantification and performance evaluation metrics for machine learning models.

· Working knowledge of containerization tools like Docker and orchestration platforms like Kubernetes for deploying and managing AI applications.

· AWS experience or certification.

· Experience with deployment/scaling of machine learning models in production environments.

· Experience with MLOps workflows and tools (e.g., Kubeflow, MLflow, Git-based version control).

· Prior internship/project experience delivering prototypes or research outcomes to stakeholders.

· Working knowledge with databases such as PostgreSQL, MySQL, MongoDB, and NoSQL databases.

· Experience designing, documenting, and debugging analytical pipelines and machine learning workflows.
