Industrial & Environmental Hygiene (IEH) provides all-encompassing management and administration of environmental hygiene inclusive of: asbestos, lead, PCBs, indoor air quality, mold, hazardous materials, underground storage tanks, environmental due diligence for site development acquisitions, potable water, chemical relocation, soil excavation/characterization and disposal. IEH works very closely with Architecture & Engineering (A&E) and Construction Management (CM).

Job Description Summary

The Industrial Hygienist - C is responsible for ensuring compliance with appropriate laws and regulations governing health and safety in the workplace and in schools.

Job Description

Responsibilities include:

  • Conducts site inspections, as needed, to monitor progress and perform quality control of consultants and contractors field activities.

  • Resolves field problems and disputes involving contractors, consultants, and administrative personnel of other agencies.

  • Conducts final review and approval/rejection of all documents relevant to industrial environmental hygiene.

  • Schedules, monitors, and reports on the progress of each assigned industrial environmental hygiene project, including adherence to time schedules and quality standards.

  • Evaluate and approve or reject consultant and contractor proposals, as well as request for payments, for assigned boroughs.

  • Participate in design, construction, and regulatory agency meetings to provide technical expertise in industrial environmental hygiene for SCA projects.

  • Oversee IH-B's workload, ensuring effective work distribution and adherence to project schedules.

  • Performs administrative duties related to the supervision of subordinate staff (lower level Industrial Hygienists and other staff).

  • Stay current with applicable regulations, guidance documents, procedures, and industry standards related to industrial environmental hygiene.

  • Educates/trains project stakeholders regarding matters of industrial hygiene.

  • Performs related tasks.


May perform the duties of Industrial Hygienist - B:

  • Conducts initial review of all construction documents to ensure compliance with appropriate provisions related to environmental conditions before they are sent for final approval.

  • Coordinates all phases of environmental projects assigned.

  • Coordinates all administrative project aspects relevant to Environmental conditions for all projects assigned.

  • Monitors job sites to determine the presence of occupational health hazards and ensures that industrial hygiene standards are maintained, and appropriate safety provisions are observed.

  • Prepares special reports requested by supervisors.

  • Recommends appropriate equipment and techniques for protection against exposure to harmful substances and hazardous conditions or operations.

  • Educates/trains project stakeholders regarding matters of industrial hygiene.

  • Performs related tasks.

May perform the duties of Industrial Hygienist - A:

  • Collects samples of potentially hazardous materials for analysis.

  • Coordinates asbestos abatement activities on construction projects.

  • Assists in review of construction documents to assure appropriate provisions relating to industrial hygiene with emphasis on the handling of asbestos.

  • Prepares reports recommending both preventative and corrective action with respect to industrial hygiene, as well as providing technical guidance, as required.

  • Performs related tasks.

Salary:

  • Appointment Rate: $84,344 - $125,801

  • Incumbent Rate: $$96,996 - $144,671

Subject to the provisions of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, the appointment rate for any newly hired employee, or employees with less than two years of active City or SCA service, shall be 15% less than the applicable incumbent rate or step.

Education

Baccalaureate: Engineering, Architecture, Environmental Health Sciences or related field

Certifications (if required)

City Certified Investigator/State Department of Labor Project Monitor - NYS Department of Labor

Work Experience

Four years of fulltime experience performing hazard/toxic substance assessments, OR a satisfactory combination of education and experience. Selective Certification for Specialty Experience Survey & Design, must have a minimum of four years of experience specializing in survey & design. Field Operations: must have a minimum of four years of experience specializing in field operations. Hazmat: must have a minimum of four years of experience specializing in Hazmat.
