The Position
The Institute of Human Biology (IHB) is a newly established research center in Basel, Switzerland, dedicated to advancing the understanding of disease biology through the use of human model systems. The institute fosters dynamic collaboration among biologists, engineers, and data scientists, bridging the gap between academic and pharmaceutical research. Closely associated with Roche’s Pharmaceutical Research and Early Development (pRED), we partner with leading academic institutions both locally and globally to address grand challenges with bold, innovative science.
The Opportunity
The position is raised as part of the initiative to establish a Data Analytics platform in IHB, referred to as A-IHB. We are looking for a highly motivated and talented Image Analysis Data Scientist to work at the interface of exploratory academic research and process innovation in a leading Biopharma company. You will join the Institute of Human Biology (IHB), collaborating with scientists and engineers to design and implement computational pipelines and frameworks for the analysis of large-scale and time-resolved 3D imaging data.
Your work will enable quantitative readouts from complex human model systems and directly support biological discovery. Working in a fast-paced research environment, you will contribute to the advancement of next-generation human model systems, analytical pipelines and open-source software tools used by the broader bioimaging community.
You will work closely with experienced data scientists and software engineers, receiving guidance while progressively taking ownership of your projects. For efficient interactions with collaborators you will work primarily onsite. You will be responsible to:
Apply and adapt state-of-the-art image analysis methods to solve biologically relevant problems in collaboration with IHB scientists
Design, implement, and validate scalable image analysis pipelines for terabyte-scale 3D imaging datasets
Translate disease biology questions into quantitative computational workflows with guidance from senior team members
Contribute to codebases following best practices in software engineering
Proactively communicate progress, results, and challenges to collaborators
Continuously expand your expertise in image analysis, computational biology, and scientific software development
Present results to interdisciplinary audiences within IHB
Who you are
Advanced degree (PhD or MSc with relevant experience) in computational sciences, computer science, electrical engineering, or related fields
Proficiency in Python and familiarity with relevant scientific and visualization frameworks
Experience with modern software engineering tools and methods
Background in designing scalable solutions for high-performance computing or cloud environments is a plus
Proficiency in concepts of Computer Vision and related methods in Deep Learning
Proficiency in data analysis and statistical methods
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts clearly to a non-technical audience
Team player with the ability to also work independently and proactively
