Description of Work

The Maintenance/Construction Technician provides carpentry, maintenance and repair for the interior and exterior of all modern and historic buildings, outdoor decorative wooden elements and wooden fences. This position is also involved in exhibition construction.

Key Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Performing carpentry maintenance and preservation for a total of 41 buildings, to include more than 14 large historic buildings, the 60,000 square foot modern North Carolina History Center and 26 supporting buildings, fences, exterior garden furniture, and other associated objects on the Tryon Palace campus.

Assisting in painting and other building trade tasks as assigned, including minor masonry, walkway and metal work, as well as repairs to door lock systems.

Working with other Facilities staff in the setup, take down and storage of scaffolding, ladders, construction of wooden platforms and staging.

Assuring all hand tools, power tools and stationary machines are cleaned and serviced routinely to ensure proper functioning and safety in use.

Purchasing necessary supplies for preventive maintenance and repair work, following Department purchasing requirements and established guidelines for securing materials.

Recruitment Range: $31,200 - $43,346

Candidates meet the minimum qualifications of this position if they meet the minimum education and experience listed on the vacancy announcement. Vacancy specific knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) and/or management preferences are not required. Applicants who possess the following are preferred:

  • Museum or historic structure experience in maintenance preservation.

  • Experience working with tools and materials used in the preservation, reproduction, and fabrication of wooden decorative and architectural elements.

  • Experience reading and working from sketches, scaled drawings, and blueprints.

Position/Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to work Monday-Friday 7:30-4:30 with one hour for lunch. Rotating on-call weekend duty. Some evenings and weekends as required.

  • Must be able to lift heavy materials (50-100 lbs.), perform repetitive manual tasks with or without reasonable accommodation.

  • Must be able to operate power equipment daily.

  • Must be able to work in extreme weather conditions.

  • Must be able to climb ladders and scaffolding.

  • Must be able to work indoors and outdoors.

  • Must have a valid driver’s license issued from within the United States or be able to obtain one within 90 days of employment.

Minimum Education and Experience

High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma or

a sufficient year-for-year combination of education and experience associated with a variety of mechanical or building trades;

** Necessary Special Qualification May require current certification by the Environmental Protection Agency as a Type I, II, III or Universal technician as required by Title 40, Code of Federal Regulations Part 82, Subpart F.

Veteran’s and National Guard Preference
