Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:

The Academic Advisor II supports undergraduate student success in the Apparel, Events, and Hospitality Management (AESHM) programs within the College of Health and Human Sciences. This role provides holistic academic advising, helping students navigate degree requirements, university policies, and academic planning while promoting engagement and retention.

The advisor collaborates with students to develop academic plans, facilitates processes such as course substitutions and major changes, and maintains accurate advising records using student success systems. The position also contributes to a team-based advising approach, including support of AESHM Learning Communities that enhance student transition and success.

In addition, the Academic Advisor II co-teaches introductory professional development courses for incoming students, supports recruitment initiatives across AESHM programs, and participates in departmental service and professional development activities.

Required Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • 2 years of related experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree
  • Experience advising students in a higher education setting
  • Experience with public speaking and presenting to groups
  • Experience in fashion design and merchandising, hospitality management, or event management industries.

The Department of Apparel, Events, and Hospitality Management (AESHM) at Iowa State University prepares students for dynamic careers in fashion design and merchandising, event planning, and hospitality management. AESHM programs are designed to support career readiness, equipping graduates to succeed in a wide range of global industries.
