As a Laboratory Assistant at Cleveland Clinic Laboratories, you will support diagnostic and consultative services that contribute to world-class patient care and the completion of over 20 million tests annually. In this role, you will perform a variety of laboratory and clerical duties across one or more laboratory areas. Responsibilities include receiving specimens delivered overnight, verifying associated paperwork, and ensuring proper specimen preservation, including the presence of formalin. Your work will help maintain accuracy, efficiency, and compliance in laboratory operations that support patient diagnosis and treatment.

This is a regular PRN position, with caregivers working days between 8:00 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. or 8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

A caregiver who excels in this role will:

  • Perform various laboratory procedures.  

  • Assist with receiving, identifying, accessioning, processing, transporting, and storing specimens. 

  • Operate laboratory equipment and performs routine instrument maintenance, trouble shooting and minor repairs. 

  • Perform Quality Assurance activities.  

  • Maintain adequate stock of supplies; performs inventory management of transporting and distributing supplies. 

Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:  

  • High School Diploma or GED 

  • Completion of three months of on-the-job training to learn department laboratory procedures, instrumentation and Cleveland Clinic policies 

  • Critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision

  • Ability to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action


Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:

  • Histology or microbiology lab assistant background

  • Previous experience in a lab

  • Histology experience

  • Knowledge of anatomy and medical terminology

Physical Requirements:

  • Requires manual dexterity and visual acuity when handling specimens and utilizing instrumentation.

  • Ability to safely handle potentially infectious patient specimens, carcinogenic substances, odorous and other hazardous materials to which they may be exposed.

  • Requires frequent sitting or standing.

Personal Protective Equipment:

  • Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required.
