Description of Work

This is a Transportation Worker II position located in Division 2 Greene Co. Maintenance Unit. Work will consist of a wide range of progressively responsible maintenance tasks in the preventive maintenance, repair, and construction of State Maintained roads and roadside features. Work includes installing traffic and erosion control devices, operating a variety of hand and power tools, clearing right of way, performing preventive maintenance and repairs to pavements, shoulder maintenance, pipe installation or other drainage tasks, inventorying and tracking quantities used of materials, performing manual labor tasks, and the operation of assigned heavy equipment. Work will involve lifting up to 80 lbs. repeatedly. Work involves walking and standing for long periods of time, shoveling, raking, and sweeping. Workers will be exposed to all types of weather conditions. Workers will be expected to traverse steep and uneven terrain, work in extreme temperature conditions, perform manual labor road maintenance duties, and other assigned duties. Workers in this position will be expected to act upon both verbal and written communication to successfully complete assigned tasks. Safety toe footwear is needed for this position.

This position is subject to emergency callback, scheduled night work, and out-of-town travel during adverse weather or other extreme circumstances.

Selected applicants will be expected to legally operate a motor vehicle and have a Class A CDL with N endorsements and no restrictions. Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be maintained through completion of on- the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49CFR383) within 360 days of hire. Pre-employment drug testing is required. As a condition of employment, release forms (ALCDRG-01 and ALDCRG-06) must be signed allowing NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol testing.

This position will be responsible for transporting inmates for work detail. An inmate card approved by the NC Department of Public Safety must be issued to NCDOT employees to transport inmates. In order to obtain an inmate card applicants must undergo a criminal history check, complete necessary training and orientation, and be at least 21 years of age.

Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

Salary Grade and Salary Range:  NC05 $33,902.00 - $59,327.00

Management prefers applicants with the following:

  • Working knowledge of standard road maintenance and construction procedures.
  • Working knowledge of Work Zone Safety and Workplace safety policies.
  • Experience in at least two pieces of Category B Maintenance equipment (asphalt distributor, asphalt mixer, asphalt patcher, crack sealing machine, ditching machine, force feed loader, front end loader, lube truck, asphalt maintainer, post driver, skid steer, street sweeper, tandem dump truck, tractor “A” boom mower, truck w/aerial device).
  • Experience in one of the following: pipe installation, installation of erosion control devices, snow and ice removal, ditch maintenance or asphalt patching.
  • Experience in snow and ice removal operations.

Additional Expectations:
