Description of Work

Serves on 2-member team as an Electronics Technician for moveable or fixed span bridges in Division 2, responsible for assisting with troubleshooting and repairing electrical and electronic issues for moveable span bridges including motors, motor drive systems, electronic controls and safety interlocks as well as the electrical utility distribution for HVAC, lighting and all other electrical equipment installed. Acts as an emergency responder for drawbridge failures as controls are predominately electrical or electronic in nature. Assists with conducting the electrical inspection of drawbridges and their components and documents any deficiencies found. Work requires ability to read electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, ladder logic control diagrams & equipment manuals. Work is performed in an assigned area & statewide. Expected to participate in an on-call rotation. Preference will be given to applicants with North Carolina Electrical Contractor’s License. Moveable bridge experience preferred. The primary base of operations for this position is in New Bern, although work will be required statewide.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

Salary Grade and Salary Range:  NC09 $41,206.00 - $72,113.00 Annually

Management prefers applicants with the following:

  • Knowledge of the National Electrical Code, MUTCD, and AASHTO and Federal Regulations pertaining to moveable bridges and Fixed bridge navigational lighting.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices applied in the installation, repair, and maintenance of electrical and electronic traffic control systems.
  • Experience reading and understanding electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, equipment manuals, and PLC ladder logic.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office and computers for monitoring and downloading electrical data.

Demonstrated ability to work in confined spaces, climb bridge structures, work from both aerial & under-bridge equipment, and the ability to navigate and work from a boat.

Minimum Education and Experience

Associate's degree in electronics from an appropriately accredited institution and one year of experience in the repair and maintenance of a variety of specialized electronic devices, preferably including some responsibility for circuit modification; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Based on the nature of work performed, it may require appropriate licensure by the governing board or commission.
