Position Summary
The Agentic Artificial Intelligence (AI) Engineer is responsible for designing, building, deploying and operating autonomous Artificial Intelligence (AI) agents that power AI-driven business operations across Rolls-Royce Power Systems.
This role applies to a Large Language Model (LLM)-first engineering approach where Large Language Models serve as the reasoning core of intelligent agents, while enterprise systems, application programming interfaces (APIs) and tools act as deterministic execution layers. The successful candidate will develop production-ready AI agents, implement multi-agent orchestration frameworks, and ensure that all autonomous actions are traceable, auditable and aligned with business governance requirements.
You will work closely with Artificial Intelligence product owners, software engineers, domain experts and enterprise technology teams to deliver scalable, reliable and compliant Artificial Intelligence solutions that accelerate business outcomes while maintaining the highest standards of quality, security and regulatory compliance.
What you will be doing:
Artificial Intelligence Agent Design and Development
- Design and develop autonomous Artificial Intelligence agents where reasoning, classification, planning and routing are performed by Large Language Models.
- Build production-ready Artificial Intelligence agent capabilities from design through deployment within agile delivery cycles.
- Implement structured outputs, validation mechanisms and constraint enforcement to ensure reliable and auditable responses.
- Develop comprehensive testing strategies covering functional, adversarial and edge-case scenarios.
- Continuously improve agent performance, reasoning quality and reliability.
- Multi-Agent Orchestration and Autonomous Systems
- Design and implement multi-agent architectures consisting of specialist Artificial Intelligence agents coordinated through orchestration frameworks.
- Define authority boundaries and governance controls for autonomous agent execution.
- Build agent-to-agent communication patterns that preserve business context, traceability and auditability.
- Implement graduated autonomy models, enabling progression from supervised operation to validate autonomous execution.
- Monitor production agent behaviour and implement mechanisms to detect and manage operational drift.
Enterprise Integration and Platform Engineering
- Integrate Artificial Intelligence agents with enterprise applications, business systems and digital platforms through APIs, event-driven architectures and Model Context Protocol (MCP) interfaces.
- Develop reusable tool interfaces and orchestration components that support scalable agent deployment.
- Implement idempotent and resilient agent actions to ensure safe and reliable operations.
- Support deployment, monitoring and operational management of Artificial Intelligence solutions.
- Contribute to platform engineering standards and reusable Artificial Intelligence engineering frameworks.
Artificial Intelligence Governance, Auditability and Compliance
- Implement comprehensive audit trails that capture reasoning flows, tool usage, inputs, outputs and decision histories.
- Ensure agent outputs meet explainability and transparency requirements for enterprise governance and emerging Artificial Intelligence regulations, including the European Union Artificial Intelligence Act (EU AI Act).
- Document agent capabilities, limitations, authority boundaries and operational controls.
- Support compliance reviews and governance assessments through technical documentation and evidence collection.
- Promote responsible Artificial Intelligence practices across all development activities.
Technical Leadership and Collaboration
- Collaborate with product owners, software engineers, architects and business stakeholders to define Artificial Intelligence solutions that deliver measurable value.
- Participate actively in agile development processes and engineering best practices.
- Contribute to internal standards, reusable frameworks and knowledge-sharing initiatives within the Artificial Intelligence Centre of Excellence.
- Evaluate emerging technologies, frameworks and methodologies in Generative Artificial Intelligence and Agentic Artificial Intelligence.
- Support the growth of the Artificial Intelligence Centre of Excellence through innovation, mentorship and continuous improvement.
Position requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Artificial Intelligence, Data Science or a related technical discipline.
Professional Experience
- Minimum 3 years of experience developing production software applications.
- Minimum 1 year of experience building Large Language Model-enabled, Generative Artificial Intelligence or Agentic Artificial Intelligence solutions.
- Experience delivering Artificial Intelligence-enabled features, automation solutions or intelligent systems into production environments.
- Experience working within agile software development environments.
- Experience in regulated industries such as industrial manufacturing, healthcare, energy, financial services or critical infrastructure is advantageous.
Technical Expertise
- Strong experience with Python development, including asynchronous programming, type annotations, testing frameworks, Pydantic data modelling and pytest.
- Experience integrating Large Language Models such as Anthropic Claude, Azure OpenAI or Google Vertex AI.
- Hands-on experience with prompt engineering, structured outputs, tool calling and retrieval patterns.
- Experience with agent orchestration frameworks such as LangChain, AutoGen, CrewAI, LlamaIndex Agents or Semantic Kernel.
- Experience developing and integrating REST APIs and OpenAPI-based services.
- Familiarity with workflow orchestration platforms such as Prefect, Temporal or Apache Airflow.
- Experience with relational databases and Object Relational Mapping (ORM) frameworks such as SQLAlchemy or Django ORM.
- Knowledge of event-driven architectures and messaging platforms such as Azure Service Bus or equivalent technologies.
- Experience with Docker and Kubernetes deployment environments.
- Understanding of Model Context Protocol (MCP) or equivalent Large Language Model-to-system integration standards.
- Knowledge of enterprise integration patterns, service-oriented architectures and distributed systems.
- Understanding Large Language Model-first design principles where the model performs reasoning, classification and routing functions.
- Familiarity with Artificial Intelligence reliability patterns including idempotency, retry safety and graceful degradation.
