RN – Nursing Professional Development (NPD) 2 works collaboratively with leadership and the facility Education Department to improve the quality of patient care and nursing practice, with associated patient and facility outcomes. The NPD 2 accomplishes this through facilitation of education programs and curriculum design, competency initiatives and professional development activities. The NPD 2 is responsive to evolving needs within a facility, department and/or service line, and serves as a clinical expert, learning facilitator, consultant, researcher, change agent, leader and interprofessional collaborator in a specific area of responsibility. Collaborates to identify, develop and deliver educational programs for both individuals and groups in both clinical, classroom, and virtual settings. Fosters empowerment of staff by providing support to assure clinical competency of staff and safe, effective delivery of patient care. Incorporates evidence and appropriate skill set standards and best practices into curriculum. The NPD 2 actively participates in quality improvement, evidence-based practice and nursing research processes within their purview. Essential Functions:
Clinical Expert
Serves as a role model to nursing staff in the delivery of excellent patient care for designated patient populations
Collaborates with nursing and interdisciplinary colleagues to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate strategies to address complex patient care issues
Assists staff with clinical decision making and priority setting
Collaborates with leadership to develop, evaluate, and implement standards of patient care / care planning and professional practice with attention to quality, service, cost effectiveness, comfort, safety, age specific implications, and cultural competence
Serves as a patient / family advocate, incorporating respect for and acknowledgement of cultural diversity and individual patient needs
Promotes an environment consistent with the core concepts of Patient Centered Care, and demonstration of the core values
Learning Facilitator
Facilitates the ongoing education, competency and professional development of the nursing staff and students to meet competency requirements in accordance with departmental objectives and appropriate accreditation standards
Coordinates onboarding curriculum for newly hired nursing department employees
Plans, prepares, and maintains materials for use in competency based educational programs, utilizing current standards, regulations, and evidenced based resources
Collaborates in the development or modification of patient education materials, as appropriate
Collaborates with stakeholders to assess learning needs for clinical staff, designs and implements programs and competency strategies to address identified learning needs
Incorporates principles of adult learning and evidence-based education in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of education and competency programs
Assists others in developing clinical reasoning skills
Participates in learning technologies via simulation, LMS, virtual classroom, and multimedia
Communicates effectively in visual, oral, and written form and demonstrates effective presentation skills
Facilitates initial provider and renewal courses for BLS, ACLS, PALS and/or NRP as appropriate for area

Serves as an educational consultant and/or facilitator to outside institutions as well as hospital committees, task forces, and projects

Serves as a consultant to clinical staff, physicians, administration, Nursing school programs, and the public for clinical education and the clinical nursing care of hospitalized patients

Identifies and supports needed opportunities for change
Develops programs that assist attendees to embrace change as a desired process to support best practice

Champion for Scientific Inquiry
Expands the scientific base of nursing practice by initiating and/or participating in continuous quality improvement and evidence-based practice activities and/or research studies
Critically analyzes current nursing research methods and outcomes for inclusion in the curriculum content of education to support patient care

Supports and demonstrates validated evidence-based practice
Disseminates research findings though clinical presentations and publications
Other Functions:
Maintain compliance with all company policies, procedures and standards of conduct.

A Note on Required Qualifications:
Master's degrees in nursing, leadership or education will be acceptable. Matriculated candidates actively enrolled in a master’s program with scheduled completion within specified timeframe may be considered.
UofL Health will accept a Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) from the NCSBN in lieu of a Kentucky Nursing License, per the KBN.
ANCC Specialty certification is required within 6 months of hire.
ACLS, PALS, and/or Neonatal Resuscitation Program completion may be required based on area of service.
