Our event portfolio includes multi-day flagship events, topical summits on a range of issues from education to criminal justice, custom programs, and on-the-record roundtable discussions with leading thinkers and changemakers. 

We’re hiring an Associate Director, Events to lead this work. This is a senior, high-ownership role for someone who can drive complex execution, lead cross-functional teams, and operate confidently with senior stakeholders and clients.

You’ll play a central role in shaping how The Atlantic shows up in the world. This role reports to the Managing Editor of Events

What you’ll do

  • Lead end-to-end execution across The Atlantic’s event portfolio—from small, high-touch convenings to large-scale flagship programs

  • Own cross-functional coordination across editorial, design, marketing, audience, sales, and leadership

  • Drive timelines, decision-making, and accountability across internal teams and external partners

  • Lead planning meetings and ensure clear, consistent communication throughout the event lifecycle

  • Oversee key stakeholders, including client leads, production teams, and technology partners

  • Shape the creative and experiential vision of events, including format, flow, and attendee experience

  • Manage budgets, including forecasting, negotiations, and risk identification

  • Lead venue sourcing and vendor strategy across production, AV, catering, and related services

  • Oversee all production elements and on-site execution to ensure a seamless, high-quality experience

  • Develop staffing plans and run-of-show in partnership with production and technology teams

  • Partner with audience teams to meet and exceed attendance goals

Client and sponsor leadership

  • Deliver sponsor value across the full lifecycle—from commitment through renewal

  • Translate sponsor goals into integrated, high-quality event experiences aligned with The Atlantic’s editorial standards

  • Lead client communications, including planning meetings, timelines, and program updates

  • Ensure delivery of all contractual elements, including sponsored sessions and activations

  • Establish and uphold best practices for sponsor integrations

  • Communicate and enforce editorial, ethics, and government guidelines

  • Deliver clear, compelling post-event recaps demonstrating impact

Team leadership

  • Manage and mentor at least one member of the Events team

  • Contribute to broader team operations, including staffing additional events as needed

  • Identify opportunities to improve workflows, scale operations, and evolve The Atlantic's events offerings

What you bring

  • Significant experience producing complex, high-profile events

  • Strong project management and leadership skills across multiple workstreams

  • Experience working cross-functionally with senior stakeholders in a fast-paced environment

  • Excellent communication skills and sound judgment

  • High attention to detail with the ability to think strategically

  • Experience managing budgets and vendors

  • A proactive, solutions-oriented mindset with strong ownership

  • Interest in media, journalism, or mission-driven work

Salary Minimum: $95,0000; Salary Maximum: $110,000
