Position Summary
System Protection & Control Technician must be able to calibrate, install, maintain, and repair protective relays and associated equipment to ensure the efficient, safe, reliable operation of the Duke Energy Electric Grid. The System Protection & Control Technician must be able to work in various working environments from generation plants, transmission switch yards and control houses, and distribution substations. This position must maintain a high level of awareness for hazard recognition and maintain safe work practices. Will be required to maintain, install, repair, and troubleshoot complex control systems, protective relay systems (microprocessor and electro-mechanical); substation and electric utility protection systems; station automation and supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems. This position is responsible for correctly reading and properly interpreting substation drawings (e.g., single line drawings, AC and DC schematics, panel wiring diagrams, and panel layout drawings). Perform switching and tagging to obtain proper clearance on equipment for repair, maintenance, or construction work per procedure.
Position has call-out responsibilities and must be available to work all hours as needed, day or night, weekends, or holidays, and in all weather conditions. Requires ability to travel and stay overnight to various locations. Must be available for periodic call outs to respond to power system emergencies.
Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills & Abilities)
Ability to pass a test that demonstrates a basic understanding of AC/DC theory, Ohm’s law, single phase, three phase, watts, vars, VA, phase angles, power factor and other power system parameters, computers, and associated software
Ability to read and interpret electrical/electronic schematics and functional diagrams
Ability to use state-of-the-art test equipment such as multimeters, relay test instruments, oscilloscopes and digital analyzers
Ability to demonstrate a basic knowledge of computers and associated software.
Ability to demonstrate a strong aptitude for technical work by passing the applicable EEI Technician test
Switching & Tagging Certification (within 180 days)
Successful completion of the Assistant SPAC training program
Required Basic Qualifications
Must possess a minimum two (2) year degree or equivalent (2-year diploma or certificate program from a vocational school or community college) in Electronics, Electrical Technology or similar electrical field of study, or an honorable discharge from the military where the candidate held a job in electronics or another related field, or A journeyman relay technician classification at Duke Energy or different utility.

Ability to lift up to 75 lbs.
Ability to push/pull weights up to 75 lbs.
Manual dexterity to operate small hand tools, turn small knobs, etc.
Ability to sit for 2-3 hours; maybe driving a truck or sitting
Ability to move frequently to unload equipment and to install/maintain/repair equipment
Ability to frequently climb or use authorized equipment to reach various heights
Ability to frequently and repetitively bend/stoop/squat
Ability to work in enclosed, tight spaces
